Breaking Dam Removal News

BIG Dam Removals are Happening Across Europe

The sun is out, and the dams are coming down! This summer, three giant barriers are on the docket for removal. The Roche qui Boi Dam in France is in the process of removal,  the Bowston Weir in the UK will be demolished within the week, and the Guadiana River Basin Authority has proposed the removal of the Valdecaballeros Dam in Spain!

Learn more about the upcoming removals!
The prospective removals this summer indicate an increasing trend towards barrier removal in Europe! The EU Nature Restoration Law was announced on June 22nd, prioritizing dam removals and restoring the natural connectivity of rivers and functions of floodplains. It calls for Member States to restore at least 25,000kms of free flowing rivers, including by removing obsolete dams and other river barriers.

In 2021, a record number of 239 dams were removed across Europe, and signs are pointing towards an even greater number of removals in 2022. More countries are removing dams while additional funds are flowing in, including from the Open Rivers Programme
