A monthly roundup of networking
opportunities in the UK's media scene.

🖐 Issue #43 | July 2022

Hello! Summer finally kicked off here in London 🌞  This means fewer media events are going on in the city but also that we are blessed with longer days, festival season's open and we get time to rest and recharge for what's next.

For me, while busy with attending friends' weddings and feeding off iced lattes, this summer will surely offer an opportunity to assess my career so far, celebrate the achievements of the past 10 months and truly think about what I want to focus on now.

May the sun & sea be with you this July!

This month we hear from...
Shereen Abdulla

Shereen is a Dubai-based business media producer, presenter and editor.

Her passion for the creator economy and content that humanises financial brands led her to found Spark! Studios, a creative agency producing 'digestible and soulful multimedia content worth sharing.' Among her clients figure 500 Global, Sarwa, and several financial technology publications.

On the side, she is also an advocate for female Arabs in finance, entrepreneurship and athletics.
Shereen, you are a career changer, why did you switch into media?
I entered the media world after about 12 years in finance. I actually started a podcast during lockdown, out of curiosity to one day build a source of passive income. That show got some traction and interest from within my network and one thing led to another and eventually to my first client who needed support with branded content (newsletters and podcasts). That client work got even more traction and before I knew it, I had enough prospect clients in the books for it to make sense for me to make the switch.

A lesson you wish you knew before starting
I've been hiring interns and it turned out quite complicated compared to experiences with contractors. With all the time I spent training interns, I sometime think it would have been more worth my time if I had hired people a little more experienced.

Who is the audience of Spark! Studios? How do you tailor the tone and format of your content to them?
I work with clients in the finance space and Spark! Studios' specialty is creating digestible finance, business, and entrepreneurship content. Media in this space has traditionally been more "corporate" though, so we tailor the tone of voice to help these companies  become more approachable and reach Millennials and Gen Zs.

What are your recommendations to create good work routines and beat deadlines?
I've had to switch out my workouts from evenings to mornings. Whereas it used to be my "wind-down" I now get it out of the way in the morning - and it puts me in a good mindset! We're talking, 5:30am wake ups here :) I also don't commit to socialising during weekdays. I've learned that two and an half days of socialising is actually more than enough, otherwise it would stress me out too much trying to make it to a dinner that I've committed to without missing a client deadline that's actually paying for that meal!

One productivity tool you couldn’t leave without
AirPods! I just love them so much. I fill up gaps of time "moving" around by listening to podcasts about industry news that keeps me up to speed as a writer.
