Dear Running Niche Friends,

Here we are at the end of June already. Time has been flying in the new space at 1601 Tower Grove. Here’s the latest from the Niche.
Focus On Team Running Niche: Andrew Hargis
We’ve had the pleasure of working with Andrew for 2 Lydiard cycles now. Here’s his thoughts. “Over the last 17 years I have run 16 full marathons and 7 half marathons. My previous marathon PR, 2:54:49, came at my 9th marathon in 2010 when I was 23. Since then, I have been able to run more marathons, but never as fast. With age I’ve dealt with back spasms, piriformis injuries, and knee pain. In 2017, I made another attempt to qualify for Boston which ended with a knee injury and missing the cutoff by :07. Eventually, I had succumbed to the idea that I was getting older, and my best days of marathon running were behind me.

That all changed when I was introduced to Running Niche and the Lydiard training method in 2021. My previous training had involved high milage with many of those miles at or near race pace. As I got older my body could not handle how I used to train, and I found myself dreading my training runs. Lydiard training changed all that and has rekindled my love for running. I enjoy that all the Lydiard training runs have a purpose which kept me engaged. Running my long runs slower kept me healthy and for the first time in years, I looked forward to my Sunday morning long runs. The hill training and interval work made me faster than I have ever been. I finished my first cycle strong and healthy, and the results have been beyond what I could have ever imagined at age 35.

I finished my first cycle in February 2022 with the Miami Marathon and a finish time of 2:59:41. During that cycle I also ran a PR half marathon. I was excited to jump into another cycle in the spring and was able to get stronger and faster. I ran another half marathon PR during the 2nd cycle at 1:21:07. The cycle ended with the Green Bay Marathon in May where I was finally able to break my previous PR and run a 2:54:23. I was also able to beat my Boston qualifying time by over 10 minutes. I never thought I could get back to this level of fitness, and I could not have done it without Lydiard training. I’m looking forward to staring my 3rd cycle this summer and running the Indianapolis Marathon in November!”

From Jen and Bob: Andrew is easy to coach. He follows his workouts, is consistent and takes advice well. He’s a joy to coach.

Team Running Niche: KT82
TRN competed at the KT82 June 11. Many thanks to Lauren Cawein, Bree Gaster, Sarah White, Andrew Hargis, Andy Bartlesmeyer, Ron Haglof for representing Running Niche. This hearty group finished 4th place overall AND 2nd Place COED team! Their finishing time was 10:10:52, an average of 7:27 per mile.

Team Running Niche/Spewak Racing Dual Meet
We had a fun 5K competition on June 25 with Spewak Racing out at 370 Lakeside Park. 35 runners participated and while the Spewak group took the overall honors and won the men’s, our women’s team squeaked out a win. But it wasn’t about that, it was about getting together for a nice run with a little competition and friendly folks! Good time had by all.

Fall Training
If you have a race you wish to target for the fall now is the time to start your training. As many of you know we use the Lydiard Method here at Running Niche, with Bob and Jen being certified Lydiard coaches. It is science based and is designed to get you to the starting line healthy and ready to do your best. Plans are tailored to the individual as we all are starting from a different place in training. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to endurance training. For more info email Bob at: bdyer@runningniche.com

Happy Running!
