An Outstanding Pianist of His Generation

Blessing is a new Jazz album from the Rafael Mario Trio. All nine of the songs on the album were written by trio members Rafael Mario (tracks 1-6 and 9) and Bartok Vince (tracks 7-8). The album was created with the support of the Hungarian National Cultural Fund and Hangfoglalo.

Rafael Mario was born in 1990 in Budapest and started playing the piano at the age of six. Even at a young age he already knew he wanted to be a musician all his life. While other kids were out playing ball he was practicing, while others were riding their bikes in Városliget (the central park of Budapest) he was still playing the piano, and he absorbed all the music in the world he could hear on the radio and later on the internet.

Mario Rafael is one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation. He’s the winner of a great number of international competitions. 2018’s Junior Prima Prize is his most valued accomplishment. Mario got his master’s degree at Franz Liszt Academy of Music. During his time at the academy his desire to have some adventure had him move to Canada, where he lived and worked in Toronto for two years, performing, and recording for Phase One Studio as a session pianist. After returning home he founded the Rafael Mario Trio with his peers from the academy. The band play their own compositions and are frequent performers of the Hungarian jazz scene. Mario’s music is full of emotion and romance.

This is a PureDSD album exclusively available in Stereo DSD 512, Stereo DSD 256, 128 and 64 from NativeDSD.Com

Two guitars and a double bass

The Dreamer features The Gabor Szalay Trio performing six Jazz Classics. Including Alone Together by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, There Will Never Be Another You by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, Body And Soul by Johnny Green, Edward Herman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton, Waltz New by Jim Hall, St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins and In Walked Bud by Thelonious Monk. The title track – The Dreamer – was written by Gabor Szalay.

We were asked to record this album with a line-up of two guitars and a double bass by Mr. Róbert Zoltán Hunka at Hunnia Records. He had heard this material earlier when I played together in a trio with the late great guitar maestro, Gyula Babos and excellent bass player, Viktor Hárs. This album is a tribute to that outfit. We tried to recreate the spirit of the trio by using similar material. In place of the late Gyula Babos, my friend, the excellent István Gyárfás plays the other guitar. The material is made up of well known standards with the exception of “The Dreamer” which was composed by myself earlier, but on the album, it’s dedicated to Gyula in memoriam. We only recorded just one take of each song and made absolutely no corrections afterwards in order to give it a live feel.

Pride of Japan, In a Beautiful Hall

Before beginning this recording session we discussed the main goals of the recording. Tatsuhiko Nishioka, the producer on the project, stated that he wanted to "clearly capture the touch of two masters whom Japan is proud of." The artists wanted to "make a recording that makes the most of the ambience and reverb sound of the hall." The Wien Hall in Tokyo where the recording was made has a profound sound and a rich history of great recordings.

Native DSD Blog Spotlight

“Two Spanish musicians, whom I did not know before, embarked last year on a mission to bring works of great beauty, for too long hidden in the shadow of great masters, back into the general public’s interest.

We ought to thank Cellist Lorenzo Meseguer and Pianist Mario Mora and all those having made this release possible for their contribution to the broadening of our classical music heritage.”
