EngiMath project


EngiMath project, whose UPC PI is Carles Serrat, has recently been recognized with two international awards:
    - The Golden Apple for the Best of the Best ERASMUS+ innovation projects for the 2020 and 2021 calls in Estonia.
    - The best project in the Skills Relevance category by the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education.

Data visualization tips

In a world where data really matters, we all want to create effective charts. Most of us learn data visualization as we go along, and therefore we often make choices or mistakes that confuse and disorient our audience. From overcomplicating or overdressing our charts, to conveying an entirely inaccurate message, there are common design pitfalls that can easily be avoided. Some pointers to help you create simpler charts that effectively get across the meaning of your data follow.

Self-reporting and screening

We consider survival data that combine three types of observations: uncensored, right-censored, and left-censored. Such data arises from screening a medical condition, in situations where self-detection arises naturally. Our goal is to estimate the failure-time distribution. We propose a novel methodology for distribution estimation and evaluate its performance via simulated data. Finally, we estimate the patience of patients who arrive at an emergency department and wait for treatment.

Need of data-literate citizens

In today’s world, mass illiteracy is largely – and thankfully – a thing of the past. However, we are faced with a new challenge – data illiteracy – which risks alienating millions of people from the national conversation. In our daily lives, we are continually faced with an avalanche of data, figures, numbers and statistics across both legacy and social media. So, we need to develop some kind of ‘internal warning system’ to know how data are used to influence thought and behaviour.
