Volume 18
Speechless.
That's how I felt on Friday as I was doomscrolling Twitter in the wake of the Supreme Court's deplorable decision to overturn #RoeVWade. I don't typically get super political in this list but I think those of you who are subscribed know what my views are. But, so it's clear, for the folks in the back: everyone should be free and allowed full autonomous control over their own bodies. It's legitimately mindblowing that this is even a debate.
Because this is a music newsletter and not a political ranting newsletter, though, let's get to the music. It's fitting that this is likely one of the saddest Sad Bastard playlists that I think I've compiled in a very long time. It's also fitting that 70% of the artists in this playlist are female acts or female-fronted.
It can feel hopeless in times like this as we think about all the years of hard work that have been undermined by a sweeping decision like this. Music is inherently political, which is why I feel okay about talking a bit about Roe v Wade here, and -- as with everywhere -- there's a lot of sexism in the music industry. Even listening to and promoting female music acts is a small form of defiance. But, if you feel so inclined, money makes the world go around, and there are a lot of organizations that likely need your dollars more now than ever before. Here's a few that would surely take your donations and put them to immediate good use:
If it makes sense for you, and you are not in a place where you can donate (we're heading toward a recession, after all), there are non-monetary ways you can help. Volunteering works. Calling your local representatives can help. And, if you do not possess a uterus, listening helps. Understand why this is a reprehensible decision and what you can personally do to fight back.
Stay safe, kids.
