Dear Supporters of the U.S. Network for Democracy in Brazil:

At our most recent Steering Committee meeting held on Saturday, June 25, we outlined three main activities for supports of the USNDB in the coming months:

1. This summer and fall, Brazilian members of the USNDB will be involved in independent actions to encourage Brazilians living in the United States to vote in the October presidential elections, including setting up electoral campaign committees when legally permitted to do so.

2. We encourage academics or others to plan to organize events on campuses or in other venues to educate people about the Brazilian elections in mid-September as fall classes begin. We recommend scheduling a second event in mid-October given the possibility of a run-off election, or if there is a first-round presidential victory, a discussion of the implications of the newly elected government for Brazil’s future.

3. We call on all supporters of the USNDB to be prepared to mobilize this fall should there be a threat to free and fair elections or any attemps to undermine the electoral results. If you are not yet receiving the Washington Brazil Office’s Brazilian Election Bulletin, you should subscribe here. (See bottom of page on website)

In addition, we want to encourage you to join our monthly Steering Committee meetings, held the last Saturday of the month from 2:00-4:00 pm EST. For more information, contact: roni_wine@brown.edu

Finally, we are planning a NATIONAL MEETING of the USNDB for Saturday, December 3, 2022, 9:00-5:00 at Columbia University in New York City to assess the election results and outline the future plans of the USNDB.  We hope you can join us; we will be attempting to guarantee that the meeting is hybrid.

Dear Friends,

When we put out a call back in March about evictions in Brazil, the response was beautiful. 800 people sent letters to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to demand an extension of the pandemic eviction moratorium. When our partner the Landless Workers Movement (MST) met with the STF, the ministers explicitly cited that our letters of international support swayed them. Thanks to our solidarity, 150,000 families got some breathing room.

The MST and families in Brazil are calling on us again to take action, because the moratorium extension is set to expire in a few days, on June 30th. As you well know, the conditions that led to a need for the moratorium are still there, with growing numbers of people living on the streets as the pandemic continues. If this eviction moratorium expires, half a million people could be added to the rolls of homeless.

Take action today to stop evictions and extend the moratorium! Here is what you can do:
  1. Sign and share the action alert. Let's flood the STF with letters so they know the world is watching!

  2. Make a personal video in support of the Despejo Zero campaign. Follow this guide and post on social media using the hashtag #DespejoZero

  3. Share articles and videos about this campaign to raise awareness and inspire people to sign the action alert

  4. Reach out to organizations, intellectuals, lawyers and celebrities with international visibility asking them to publicly add their names to the STF letter (email cassia@mst.org.br for this) and to post videos, written statements and social media posts using the hashtag #DespejoZero.

Despejo Zero!
We thank you for your continuous support and involvement with the USNDB! Be sure to follow us on our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube for more updates on our work and to access our past webinars, campaigns, statements and more.

Take care,
