George Mewes News

Good afternoon, folks!

I've got a special offer to go with this week's guest cheese Monte Enebro – buy 200g or more and you get a FREE 150g can of our delicious Perello picante Gordal olives! Find out more about Monte Enebro below!

I said last week that the Seahills Scottish strawberries will be finishing soon – just to let you know, we won't be getting any more of the large premium strawberries but we will be getting the smaller end of season crop for a couple of weeks. They're still as delicious, still as sweet!
With the hospitality sector opening up again I was out at a couple of restaurants this week doing some cheese tastings – we supply all kinds of eateries and if you're looking for a special selection of cheeses for your menu get in touch at glasgow@georgemewes cheese.co.uk or edinburgh@georgemewes cheese.co.uk and let's see what we can do for you!

All the best in cheese

Guest Cheese of the Week  Monte Enebro
Hailed as a modern classic cheese from Spain – in fact, some have even called it the best goat's cheese in the world – Monte Enebro has won a stack of medals at the World Cheese Awards, including six golds, since its birth in the 1980s.
Made with pasteurised goat's milk by Paloma Bàez in the Castilla y León region, Monte Enebro has a beautiful snowy white paste which is milky, lemony and fruity, surrounded by a smooth bluey-grey rind. Unusually, penicillium roqueforti, the mould used in nearly all blue cheeses, is rubbed onto the surface of the cheese rather than being introduced to the curd and that gives the rind a distinct peppery, mushroomy and herby flavour. When young, cave-matured Monte Enebro has a dense chalky and brittle texture and tastes mild, bright, tangy and lactic towards the centre, becoming more intense in flavour towards the rind. As it ages the aroma becomes more pungent, the paste becomes more runny under the rind, and the flavour becomes much more lingering and goaty.
Monte Enebro is fantastic creamy cheese for summer al fresco eating and goes well with Sauternes or Spanish dessert wines, but it's also delicious melted.
An unusual and very tasty cheese – well worth a punt, especially with a free can of Gordal olives! Add some to your basket today!

Treat of the Week
Les Ruchers de la Paumerie Honey

Amazing French honey, especially with a deliciously creamy goat's cheese – like Monte Enebro! The family behind Les Ruchers de la Paumeraie have been beekeeping since 1856, producing some of the best and most fragrant honey you will ever taste. Lime, Chestnut and Lavender flavours speak for themselves, while the Alpine is derived from the flowers of the summer mountain meadows. This is a seasonal product, so claim a jar while you can!
