This episode of W.I.T. from John has me thinking about how many of the single best days in the S&P 500 come during bear markets.
 
Can it be true that the majority of the 100 best days in the S&P 500 have occurred during bear markets? That's what I am thinking this week...
Three Things Worth Sharing

Fix your ball marks - I hope you’ve been getting out on the golf course often with the great summer weather we’ve been having of late.  Speaking of golf, this is a good time to remember to fix pitch marks on the green – and to do it the right way (I’m looking at you, Jason)! 

This visual shows how the top of the fixing tool should be used to push the grass in toward the mark, and not as a lever to lift the grass underneath the mark (which tears out the roots).  Hopefully you will be fixing your ball mark (plus one other mark!) on every hole…which will mean you are on every green in regulation!
 

Truly celebrate our independence - Every year around this time when I pull out the copy of the Declaration of Independence I keep in a drawer in my office, invariably my focus gets drawn to the last line: 
 
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.’

I am struck by the commitment the signers made by putting their names on this document - knowing that a defeat of the revolution meant certain imprisonment, impoverishment and possibly even death.  Which begets a great question to reflect on between picnics and fireworks this Independence Day weekend: What are the principles in my life – or in yours – for which would we risk literally everything?
 


Just for fun - The New York Times documented the demise of the pay phone booth, with only four official phone booths in Manhattan remaining.  Along a similar vein of my note in a recent W.I.T. about Kmart closing all but a few stores in the US, this article provides some nostalgia for those of us of a certain age.
About the 'What I'm Thinking' Series
I do a lot of reading and thinking about personal finance so that our clients don’t have to and I periodically share my thoughts through this series of short recordings & emails - which I’ve creatively titled ‘What I’m Thinking’!
 
Over time there will be some topics that appeal to everyone, some that will be mildly interesting and some that only folks who are really into personal finance will find useful - which is just perfect.  Take whatever is useful to you from these and ignore the rest - in fact I give you permission to just hit the delete button if it sounds Iike more work than fun to listen!

Mark Twain once said ‘I was going to write you a short letter but I didn’t have time, so I’m writing you a long one.’  That concept really resonates with me, so I work really hard to keep these episodes short and digestible.  I hope you find them interesting - please share it with others that might enjoy it as well!
