Three-Day Weekend & Beyond
Shoreline Lake July 4th Hours

July 4th Weekend Hours

Looking for a Fun & Festive Independence Day? Just add a certain Lake, and a view of nature to get that relaxing feeling started, and perhaps a little lounging at the American Bistro outdoor patio.

Hours on the Fourth, for both the Boathouse & Bistro, will be extended past regular Park hours (sunrise to an hour or so after the fireworks end):

  • Bistro: 8am-10pm (limited evening menu)
  • Boathouse: 10am-8:30pm (evening fireworks rentals from 9pm-10:15pm)

This gives visitors a chance to take advantage of all that great sunshine, and have fun on-the-water, or maybe just get a much deserved break lakeside.

And, you can hang out after dark to catch the fireworks show at Shoreline Amphitheatre. It'll be a great view, whether you're on the grassy areas, or out on the water.

Shoreline Lake, July 4th On-the-Water Fireworks Viewing

Fireworks Viewing Update & Snack Pack

Heads up... If you want to take a group out on the lake for the fireworks viewing, the pedalboats and rowboats are sold out! However, there is a waitlist option available.

Also, since visitors really missed getting out on the water to enjoy this spectacular show, the Boathouse is now down to just a few canoes, a double kayak, and a smattering of single kayaks for that evening's entertainment. The waitlist option applies here as well...

Plus, if you want to continue the picnicking on the water, a special deluxe "snack pack" can be pre-ordered when reserving your vessel, or via the Bistro directly at 650-965-1745 (NB! Orders placed with the Bistro must be in by 5pm, Friday, July 1st).

More details, including snack pack items and additional watercraft reservation information, can be found in the July Upcoming Events section.

Shoreline Lake July 4th Barbecue

July Fourth Barbecue

While the Park doesn’t allow for individual barbecues, on July 4th, from 11am-3pm, the Bistro will get the grill going, so everyone can have a barbecue picnic here, and enjoy being out on the patio taking in the waterfront view.

You’ll get a whopping great plate – a choice of 1-, 2- or 3-types of meat with 2 sides. In addition, veggie burgers, hot dogs and hamburgers will also be available. For more info check out the July Upcoming Events section.

Given the popularity of celebrating the Fourth of July at Shoreline Lake (barbecue, brunch, picnicking, etc.), if bringing a larger group, please make a reservation with the Bistro (650-965-1745 and bistro@shorelinelake.com).

Shoreline Lake Bastille Day Celebration

Bastille Day Celebration

As another way to mark the middle of summer, Shoreline Lake also makes a point of commemorating Bastille Day (Thursday, July 14th).

So why does France's Independence Day get a boost here? Perhaps because of Christina Ferrari's French culinary training (she runs the Boathouse & Bistro). And, because Shoreline Lake looks like something straight out of a Georges Seurat painting – boats on the water, a view of nature...and perhaps a glass of wine with friends and family on the Bistro patio.

That French influence, especially at the American Bistro means that we'll be highlighting not only their house-made French pastries, but also adding Croque Monsieur (the world's best toasted cheese sandwich) and Croque Madame (the world's best toasted cheese sandwich, with a fried egg on top) to the menu.

Regarding the pastries, these classics include hand-made croissants, brioche, tarts, galettes, and other real French pastries, in a display of gastronomic artistry. Bistro patrons are fond of these treats...

If you need to pre-order pastries for your own special occasion (or just need a larger order), please contact the Bistro (650-965-1745 and bistro@shorelinelake.com).

Please Say Hello
Chris Nicol, Shoreline Lake Boathouse Manager

Chris Nicol – Summer Boathouse Manager

Anyone taking the Intro & Advanced Kayaking courses at Shoreline is likely to meet him, but we wanted to give Chris Nicol, the newest member of the Shoreline Crew, a shoutout here!

Besides extensive teaching and whitewater kayaking experience (from his hobby job of river guiding in Bozeman, MT), boating and other watersports come second nature. He grew up in Seattle, spending a great deal of time on the water. And, at Shoreline, his top goal is for employees and customers to have a fun, productive and safe summer

Handling management of Boathouse day-to-day activities, as well as the Human Resources end, he wears many hats: In addition to the kayaking courses, these include recruiting, training and managing new seasonal staff, assisting with Camps, building out infrastructure (e.g., new SUP rack & Kayak beach dock), ensuring vessels all work properly, and more.

With so much happening at Shoreline every day, his construction experience and a BA in Business Administration from Washington State University (double major in Management Operations and Management Information Systems) also come in handy.

So, if you need details about kayaking at Shoreline, or have other watersports and Boathouse-related questions, Chris would be happy to help  (boathouse@shorelinelake.com and 650-965-7474). Welcome aboard!

Kid & Teen Summer Camps
Shoreline Lake, Kid & Teen Summer Camps

Spotlight on Younger Kids

Another heads up! Space in all camps from late July+ is filling up (even for the extra sessions put into the rotation from the waitlist option), including the more advanced camps that may require a skills assessment first.

We did want, though, to highlight Camp Shoreline, Paddle Adventure and Beginner Bug Sailing, as these camps are the perfect outlet for younger kids (ages 5-13) to really take advantage of, and enjoy, outdoor water-based activities in a safe, warm environment, away from the Bay.

The variety of activities in these camps – derived from a STEM, as well as, watersports-based foundation – provide an opportunity for youngsters who want to challenge themselves both physically and cognitively, and still just have some fun letting loose with other kids.

If you need a guide for evaluating the possible options for skills progression, our Parent FAQ page ("What class?" section) can provide help for determining the best match.

To learn more, and if you have questions about availability (varies by week), please contact the Kids' Programs staff (boathouse@shorelinelake.com or 650-965-7474).

Watersports Highlights
Shoreline Lake, Kayaking & Sailing Classes

Kayaking & Sailing

If the camps schedule isn't a fit for your older kids, teens (ages 14+), as well as adults, may find the group classes an option.

In addition to other sports, Shoreline also offers group weekend and private Kayaking and Sailing courses – from beginner to advanced, that go into November. These courses are also a good opportunity to take a class with your kids, as both the Kayaking and Sailing classes allow for participants with different levels of expertise to advance their abilities in a systematic manner, and have fun at the same time.

And, if you want to push your sailing skills further, Shoreline Lake also offers a US Sailing Certification Package that bundles the Introductory and Intermediate Sailing courses, with two 1-hour private lessons, plus an additional 4 hours of rental time (inclusive of all fees associated with both classes).

While online registration is available for the group classes, please note that registration for the more advanced offerings (weekend group, as well as for private and semi-private instruction), may require a skills assessment performed by a Boathouse instructor first.

Boathouse staff can provide additional information, help with assessments, and take care of registration for private or semi-private instruction and the US Sailing Certification Package. They can be reached by phone (650-965-7474) or email (boathouse@shorelinelake.com and sailing@shorelinelake.com).

Shoreline Lake SUP & SUP & Yoga

Intro SUP & SUP Yoga

To get newbies feeling more at ease and having fun on the water, Standup Paddleboarding makes a great first jaunt into watersports.

The dedicated "Intro SUP for Kids" class (ages 8-13), as well as a regular Intro class geared towards teens and adults, makes a great platform for learning basics that transfer to other paddle and board sports.

On another level, there's SUP Yoga – providing a unique opportunity to explore new facets of your Yoga practice, and enjoy the great outdoors.

It's studio yoga getting off the mat and onto the water, and Shoreline offers Beginner/Intermediate Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga sessions. No experience in yoga or paddleboarding necessary. Check out the SUP Yoga page for more details.

Group weekend classes registration for the Intro SUP and SUP Yoga classes is available online. Please contact the Boathouse (boathouse@shorelinelake.com and 650-965-7474) to register for private classes.
