Momentum Makers with the vertical Propel ATL logo on a light green background

Dear Friend,

I am thrilled to send you this first Momentum Makers newsletter as Propel ATL (formerly the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition). Our new name was carefully selected after much consideration and many conversations with stakeholders. It reflects our expanded mission to advocate not only for safe streets for people who ride bicycles but for all Atlantans who use active, sustainable transportation, such as walking, taking public transit, and using wheelchairs, scooters, and skates.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out. As a Momentum Maker, you are a key supporter of this work, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Warmly,

Rebecca Serna
Executive Director
Propel ATL (formerly the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition)

P.S. We are rebuilding our online merch shop with our new logo. What Propel ATL items would you like to see that we don’t already have in our shop? Let us know here.

Our Work

Atlanta Streets Alive

A small group of people move down a street using wheelchairs, bicycles, and by walking

Many of you are ardent supporters of Atlanta Streets Alive and have been patiently waiting for updates. We have been working hard behind the scenes with Atlanta City Council to make Atlanta Streets Alive a frequent, ongoing occurrence.

Good news — we are thrilled to announce that Atlanta City Council and Mayor Dickens have included funding for a City staff position to manage Atlanta Streets Alive, as well as a budget for event logistics and supplies in the City's Fiscal Year 2023 budget! This is a welcome step towards our goal. The commitment will help more people choose sustainable transportation.

Bike Family Program

Two photos: in the left hand photo, a little boy sits on a bike while a woman instructs him how to pedal. In the right hand photo, a girl rides a bike down a hill.

This spring we served nearly 100 students and family members through our Bike Family program. Bike Family equips people of all ages to bike safely and easily to the places they need to go. Each participating family member receives a bicycle plus safety gear and completes a series of bike safety classes. At the end of the program, participants practice their skills with a celebratory community bike ride.

We are so grateful to our Bike Family funders and partners, including:

  • Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA

  • Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority

  • Aztec Cycles

  • David, Helen and Marian Woodward Fund

  • Mary Alice and Bennett Brown Foundation

  • Mary Allen Lindsey Branan Foundation

  • Monday Night Garage

  • The Villages at Carver Family YMCA

  • Waterfall Foundation

  • Women’s Sports Foundation

Sun’s out, bikes out! Join us for our bike safety education classes, funded by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. We hold a variety of classes, including True Beginners, City Cycling, and Hack Your Essential Trip. Our classes are hosted by bike instructors who guide you throughout the ride to ensure safety and support. We add classes to the calendar throughout the year, so if you don't find a time that works for you, check back often!

2022 Blinkie Awards

A large group of people seated at tables look at a man speaking in front of Propel ATL spelled out in lights and balloons

Thank you so much to each of you who attended and supported the 2022 Blinkie Awards. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community in person after years of not gathering in-person. We celebrated four amazing advocates — Odetta MacLeish-White, Fire Bee, MARTA Army, and the Mozley Park Neighborhood Association — and raised nearly $35,000 to support our mission.

Didn’t make it to the Blinkies or want to see more? Read our recap blog here, or look through all the photos from the evening here.
