Celebrating and Indexing 20+ Years--200+ Issues!

Hi from Michèle and Kelly
Let's celebrate God's goodness and faithfulness in member care!

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.
We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”

I Thessalonians 1:2-3 NIV

Overview
Hi folks! In this Update we share with you 20+ years of the special issues that we have done in member care for the global mission and member care community. They are all accessible on our MCA website HERE!

We are celebrating God's goodness and faithfulness as we have joined with so many others around the world to "do mission well"--providing and developing quality member care resources to support the wellbeing and effectiveness of mission workers and sending groups
. To God be all the glory for all 200+ issues!

Specifically we are indexing and linking for you three sets of global member care updates that we have compiled from 2001-current. These materials are full of perspectives and materials that continue to be relevant for the mission and member care community! They are a repository of resources that reflect both the historical flow of care and caregivers and the expanding directions and impact of quality member care.

Repository of Resources
--The first 17 Member Care Global Briefings done 3-4 times per year for the Global Member Care Resources Network (MemCa) (2001-2006)
--The first 25 monthly Member Care Updates done for the Ethne to Ethne Member Care Network (E2MC) (2006-2008)
--The entire 159 monthly Member Care Updates done for Member Care Associates (MCA) organized by theme and topic (2009-current)

Applications
--Look over the three sets of member care updates below, noting the extensive range of topics and tools that have been shared over the past 20+ years.

--Probe further into at least one Update per set to get a sense of the historical flow of care and caregivers.

--Consider how best to make use of this repository of resources to support your work in mission and member care.

--Share this special Update with your colleagues, organizations, and networks.

Doing Member Care Well. We finish this Update with materials from Doing Member Care Well (2002), celebrating the 20th year of is publication. It includes links to many of its chapters in six languages and encourages us to "do mission well" by prudently building on our member care foundations as we face the ongoing and overlapping issues in our precarious, perilous, and precious world.

Love never ceases.
Epigraph from the Prefaces in Global Member Care Volumes 1-2

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you.
Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you
not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.”

I Thessalonians 2:7-8 NIV

MemCa Global Briefings
From October 2001 to June 2006 there were 17 Briefings sent three to four times a year. The Briefings contained a variety of news, updates, resources, and perspectives on member care from around the world. They ranged in length from two pages to 10+ pages. These initial MemCa Briefings, written/complied by Kelly O’Donnell and formatted by Harry Hoffmann, and are still great sources for providing resources and perspectives as well as for reviewing historical developments of member care. They are archived and available in pdfs HERE (in a zip folder--note that because of the "general" nature of the content we have not listed them by either theme or topic). For current updates and news see the Global Member Care Network Facebook page.

Description--Remembering Our Roots!
"GREETINGS: Welcome again to the Member Care Briefing. We are sending this communiqué to around 1500+ people who are actively involved in member care. Included are members of regional and national task forces, people who oversee member care related ministries, member care practitioners, and several mission/church leaders. It is a service of Global Member Care Resources (MemCa) which is part of the WEA Mission Commission [formerly WEF Mission Commission]. We send the Briefing three times a year, and include important updates and analyses regarding member care. It helps to further link us together as a growing, international member care community. We encourage you to save this communiqué for future reference and to share it with your colleagues. Please also feel free to submit material for us to include."

"MemCa is an affiliation of international colleagues (currently about 20) committed to help develop member care resources within the mission/aid community. Our members come from different organisations and churches, and represent various geographic and specialty networks in member care. We are a “partnership of networks” and the networks connect to MemCa via their leaders/liaisons who are part of MemCa. Our special emphasis is on working together and with others to support personnel from the A4 regions (Asia, Africa, ArabicTurkic, America-Latina), and those working among UPGs (unreached people groups). Members are also committed to provide personal and work-related support for each other as needed. Our growing friendship and Christian fellowship provide the foundation for our joint work."

Doing Member Care Well
Doing Mission Well
Building on Our Foundations into the Future

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 13:35

This year 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of Doing Member Care Well (2002). Many of the 50 chapters are available in 6 languages and many are online for free. We continue to build on this historic volume via this Update's focus on doing mission well in view of the many challenges and opportunities in our world to do good and to share the good news. We encourage you to have a look at the foundational excerpt below from the Introduction and to review the two chapters highlighted.

“The development of member care really has its origins in the biblical admonitions to “love one another” (John 13:34), “bear one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2), and scores of similar “one another” verses that fill the New Testament (see Jones & Jones, 1995, pp. 160-162). Member care, in this sense, is nothing new. Yet what is new is the more organized attempt to develop comprehensive, sustainable member care approaches to support cross-cultural Christian workers....The word “member” implies belonging. So member care includes the sense of community, along with the attendant mutual responsibility for care between those who belong to a group (e.g., a sending organization or colleagues in a specific setting)."

--Chapter 2. Developing a Flow of Care and Caregivers by Dave Pollock. "This [very influential and inspiring] article explores the need to develop a steady stream of care on behalf on mission personnel. The essence of this care is best understood as a “flow of love”. Such love permeates the good programs, competent practitioners, mutual support between mission personnel, and the supportive resources needed throughout missionary life. Our love and unity demonstrate that we are His disciples. Love is the definitive apologetic and the core component of mission strategy.”

--Chapter 48. Developing Member Care Affiliations by Kelly O'Donnell. “One of the recent developments in the care of mission personnel has been the formation of "regional interagency member care affiliations" (RIMAs). These groups help to identify and develop needed resources (e.g., team building workshops, crisis care networks, attrition research) on behalf of mission personnel in a specific region (e.g., West Africa, South Asia, German-speaking Europe). RIMAs reflect the growing cooperative efforts within both the international health care and mission communities. This article explores several characteristics of these strategic new affiliations, interspersing the discussion with some personal reflections from the author along with suggestions for their formation and maintenance. Helpful concepts from the field of community psychology are also discussed, such as identifying groups/areas at risk and empowering mission personnel/member care personnel with additional skills.”
----------
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39
