Rainbow Trail Reroute Update.  We had a great workday on July 16th.  A special thanks to all 14 hard-working volunteers that attended.  We have now completed almost three miles of the six mile reroute.  Trailcat should complete the mechanical effort on July 22nd.  We hope to have the reroute opened in August.
Public Lands Partner Award:  If you haven’t heard, the Public Lands Alliance (PLA) awarded CCMR and the Salida Ranger District their national 2022 Public Lands Partner Award for best practices, leading-edge achievements, and excellence in public land partnership.  The PLA awarded five nonprofits and their agency partners announcing: “This award recognizes an exemplary partnership for a stunning achievement to protect and preserve our public lands and enhance the experiences of their visitors and users.”  The Mountain Mail also ran an article in the July 15th paper. Visit the CCMR website for the full article and our acceptance video.

Central Colorado Magazine ran an article on Central Colorado Mountain Riders and Salida Mountain Trails in their July issue citing both clubs as stewards of public lands.  Good article and good press. Click here for article.
CCMR Trail Status - Spring winds played havoc, but thanks to hard work by the Salida Ranger District OHV crew, the Rainbow Trail is clear end-to-end except for the reroute closure. Some sections had 80-90 downed trees per half mile.
2023 Grants Update
CCMR submitted applications and gave presentations for two Colorado Parks and Wildlife OHV grants.  Both were awarded for funding in 2023. One grant is for Big Bend Motocross track maintenance and equipment. CCMR provides a lot of maintenance on this track with borrowed equipment. This grant would allow us to purchase a tractor, water trailer, dirt, etc. to maintain the track and make it safer.
The second grant is for CCMR adopted trail maintenance. CCMR has formally adopted 54 miles of singletrack. Some of our trails, like Poplar Gulch, need work that exceeds our normal workdays. We intend to use the grant to subcontract to professional trail builders for this work.
In addition, Fox Factory awarded a $5,000 grant (one of 19 nationwide) to repair a heavily utilized motorized section of the Continental Divide Trail.
Projects Update
Colorado Trail Headwater Hill: This has been an ongoing back-burner project for a couple of years. The issue is the mud bog south of Marshall Pass on the singletrack track segment. Hopefully, through the joint efforts of CCMR, Salida Ranger District, Saguache Ranger District, and Colorado Trail Foundation, we can solve the issues this year.
Texas Creek New Singletrack. This project was shut down because of Colorado Parks and Wildlife's concern for bighorn sheep lambing on the south end of our proposed trail. At our last CCMR-BLM meeting, we suggested changing the south end to avoid the sheep. We haven’t given up, but it is a slow process.
Porter Gulch Rainbow Trail Access: The USFS Salida Ranger District created a plan and started the NEPA process for a motorized singletrack connector trail from the Rainbow to Porter Gulch. CCMR supports this additional access point to the Rainbow for lots of reasons, including safety and search and rescue access; plus, it is a new short single track. We were recently informed the process will be delayed about a year due to an owl study being required.
Volunteer Opportunities
Vapor Trail 125:  CCMR has supported this mountain bike event for several years and we plan to again this year.  We usually do pre-race flagging and then sweep behind the MTB riders. The support dates are 26-28 August.  Volunteers are needed.
Bike Fest Support:  Salida Mountain Trails has two mountain bike races on Sep 17th.  The Banana Belt race that CCMR usually support is on non-motorized trails so our help is not required unless any members want to help SMT on their own. CCMR has volunteered to support the new gravel grinder bike race, the Salida 76. This race/ride starts and ends in Salida and uses Ute Trail (CR175) on a loop around Black Mountain.  As with the VT125, CCMR will help flag and sweep for the event. Volunteers are needed. Team Evergreen is also a promoter/sponsor.  Also, as part of Bike Fest, the Crest Crank will be on Sep 18th.
BV 14er Fest:  Since its inception, CCMR has hosted a booth at this great event 23-25 September.
Rider Down - One of our members and local Salida business owner, Dustin Rushton, had a serious accident while riding. There is a GoFundMe page for him as he will not be able to work for some time.
