IN STORE EVENT: CYNTHIA TOLBERT

Join us in welcoming author Cynthia Tolbert, author of Sanctuary, in the store on August 14 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

In Sanctuary, detective Emma Thornton takes on another murder investigation. This time, she’s helping a former client accused of killing the leader of a suspicious cult in New Orleans. James Crosby, the head of the Japaprajnas, is found dead one late afternoon, his body draped over an iron fence in the courtyard of the nineteenth century house where he and several cult members work and live. Initially presuming the fall was an accident, police investigators quickly discover that James had received a lethal dose of a drug before he was pushed from his office balcony. The next day the police discover a syringe and a substantial amount of the drug which killed James in Stacey Robert’s bedroom and bring the nineteen-year-old cult member in for questioning. She’s arrested the next day. Stacey asks Emma to represent her. Emma, who had represented Stacey when she was a sixteen-year-old runaway, agrees to take the case. Convinced that Stacey is innocent, Emma begins an investigation into the cult and its members. But Emma’s questions uncover hidden secrets, illicit activities, and the exploitation of innocent victims. Emma’s suspicions lead her down dangerous paths where she is confronted with life threatening circumstances. Eventually she finds the killer’s trail and discovers the case’s final resolution.

WHAT'S ON OUR BOOKSELLERS' TO-BE-READ LISTS?

Have you ever wondered what people who sell books for a living choose to read themselves? Several of our VaHi booksellers have revealed what they have on their current TBR lists!

Bookseller Kate may physically be in Atlanta, but mentally she's in Italy! Kate enjoys keeping it light and fun, gravitating toward romance and escapist fiction. Her next read is perfect if you're looking for your next getaway! Pictured: One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle.

Bookseller Gray's next read takes place in outer space, where thirteen-year-old Dash investigates the poisoning of an intergalactic billionaire. If you love to mix genres, then this read is for you. It's both science-fiction and mystery, and we can't wait to hear how he enjoys it. Pictured: Waste of Space by Stuart Gibbs

If you enjoy post-apocalyptic fantasy, you will want to piggyback on Bookseller Reese's latest pick! Reese has had this book on her shelf for months and is eager to give it a read. It won the Hugo Award in 2015 and will likely live up to the hype. Pictured: The Fifth Season: Every Age Must Come to an End by N.K. Jemisin.
