Bannockburn chardonnay is never short of flavour and so to this release, though the fresh zing of the finish brings a more modern twist, arguably. Pear, grapefruit, peach, cracked wheat and cedar flavours come strong and convincing, aided by citrus and fennel notes, the latter especially notable on the finish. The flavour of tinned pear here is as strong as it is delicious, it must be noted. "Mayford have over the last decade risen up and are now considered one of the leading producers of tempranillo in the country, while at the same time also helping the Alpine Valleys region to build a name for itself with alternative grape varieties. Attention to detail is high with 14 parcels of fruit handpicked over 18 days, which is a hell of a lot for what is a small production wine, with some whole bunches also used in the ferment. It has produced quite an unusual style of Australian tempranillo, almost sangiovese like with its combination of bright acidity and firm tannins. It’s embryonic and would up tight with fleshy dark berry fruits plus a dusting of tobacco and stalky spice. It’s so juicy, but also muscular with deep set tannins and balanced but visible oak helping to drive a long, acid driven finish. This is a very serious example of Australian tempranillo built for the long term. "96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice-daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? This needs a swirl or two, it's a little shy from the outset. Then suddenly a whirl of roses, black plums and subtle sweet baking spices emerge. The fruit is poised and wonderfully fresh and there's a graceful air to the palate. It flows across the palate with some pleasing amaro tannins guiding the way. This is an elegant cabernet with a fine yet youthful structure. Its full-bodied warming core has years ahead of it.  96 points.   Bob Campbell.  The Real Review. 

"Generally, contrary to many, I tend to favour 2019 Margaret Cabernet over 2018. I bit more brooding, dense, tight, ‘minerally’, and all that.  Powerful, compact, brooding sort of style, but tight too, all black fruit, dark chocolate, a seasoning of bay leaf and baking spice, some floral notes peeping over the top. Tannin is earthy and dense, but smooth and layered, boysenberry and dark raspberry, firm acidity set neatly inside, and a tobacco and black olive savoury finish of length and intensity. Made by Franco D’Anna.  It’s racy in style but it has the texture, complexity and length to pull it off.  It tastes of lemon curd and sprays of fragrant herbs, though nectarine and cedar push through too.  I don’t overtly see flint here but it’s suggestive of it; it’s a vibe thing.  There’s also a mineral water note, amongst it all, which works beautifully.  We are now a couple of years from this wine’s vintage but it still feels as though it’s a couple of years from really being ready to drink at its best, though of course there’s enjoyment to be had now.  Value once again is very high.”  92+ points, Campbell Mattinson, WineFront
