Women entrepreneurs face significant financing gaps around the world. The Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) has indicated that improving sex-disaggregated data is one of the most important measures that can be taken to close this gap. Recognizing the urgency of supporting women-led SMEs, what innovative approaches can we introduce to get more financial institutions to collect, track, and report on sex-disaggregated data?

Co-organized by the GPFI, Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi), and SME Finance Forum, the Workshop will highlight models to take GPFI recommendations on sex-disaggregated data into action. It will review the example of the UK’s Investing in Women Code, the experience of governments and financial intermediaries to collect such data and introduce a potential model for action. It will also introduce the concept of the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Code (WE Finance Code), which aims to create a systemic shift to get a critical mass of financial institutions around the world that serve MSMEs to report on a sex-disaggregated basis and increase financing to women.

The workshop will feature welcoming remarks from Doni P. Joewono, Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, and will highlight models for collecting sex-disaggregated data from several perspectives:
  • Public Sector: Spotlighting the UK Investing in Women Code, which has led over 160 UK financial institutions to start tracking and reporting MSME data on a sex-disaggregated basis. Key lessons learned from several countries participating in the Women’s Financial Inclusion Data (WFID) Partnership gender data pilots, including Honduras and Nigeria.
  • Financial Intermediaries: Perspectives on what has worked in tracking sex-disaggregated data, main challenges and lessons learned, including the experience of UK banks in becoming signatories to the Investing in Women Code.
  • Ecosystem Partnerships: The importance of multi-stakeholder approaches to accelerating the collection of sex-disaggregated data. Perspectives from MDBs and DFIs (ADB, IFC, World Bank, 2XCollaborative). Introducing the concept of the WE Finance Code and potential success factors.
GPFI is an inclusive platform for all G20 countries, interested non-G20 countries and relevant stakeholders to carry forward work on financial inclusion, including implementation of the G20 Financial Inclusion Action Plan, endorsed at the G20 Summit in Seoul.
