FREDERICK COUNTY WORKFORCE SERVICES
Welcome to the Workforce Wire, your monthly connection to all things Workforce Development and FCWS!

September is National Workforce Development Month

In Frederick and across the nation, workforce has become a hot topic as many businesses continue to struggle to hire and retain talent. It seems that every day we hear, see, and probably personally experience the impacts of staffing shortages and witness firsthand, the importance of businesses being able to access to qualified workers.

It’s hard not to notice all the “Hiring” signs all around town and many are wondering why it seems so hard to fill open positions. There are so many factors impacting the availability of enough labor to meet the needs of industry. Workforce development programming is designed to help address some of those factors through labor market education and targeted skill development to build a workforce that meets the current and future needs of business and industries.

The team at Frederick County Workforce Services is committed to growing the economic vitality of in Frederick County and helping people to grow their career potential. It’s inspiring to see how our programs positively impact the community.

Last year, the team at Frederick County Workforce Services:

  • Dispersed over $350,000 into the local community for training and skill development for individuals and businesses.
  • Provided one-one career counseling for approximately 200 individuals seeking to further their career through training and employment.
  • Supported countless local businesses with recruitment support, talent development, and access to qualified candidates.

In addition to the dedicated staff at our center, the workforce development system locally includes a network of additional community partners all working together to help people develop the skills needed to secure meaningful careers and remove barriers to self-sustainability.

We’re launching our Workforce-Wire newsletter to celebrate Workforce Development month. Over the year, we’ll feature success stories in the Frederick community, upcoming recruitment and pipeline development events, resources for businesses, local labor market data, highlight available candidates, and more.

Workforce Development In Action

It Takes A Village to Hire!

Frederick County Workforce Services (FCWS) recently partnered with a local organization to assist refugees with finding employment. Among the refugees was a man who was anxious to find work to support his family. He was familiar with production machinery from work in his native country which provided him with much needed skills for some of the high-growth industries in Frederick County. There were challenges and keys to success along the way as we assisted our new resident with landing the “job he wanted at the company he wanted!”

Challenges to overcome:

  • Language barrier and communication
  • Transportation
  • Understanding American hiring processes and requirements

Keys to overcoming challenges:

  • Community partnerships
  • Strong relationship with Dairy Maid Dairy
  • Highly motivated candidate
  • Personal attention and creativity in working through an on-boarding process.

It is often noted that “it takes a village,” and that is exactly what it took to secure the perfect position for this refugee to begin his new career in Frederick County. FCWS connected him with Dairy Maid Dairy and provided assistance throughout the application and hiring processes. Dairy Maid Dairy was willing to devise innovative solutions to complete the interview, hiring and onboarding process for this skilled candidate. In a recent communication from his new employer, they shared that "he is doing very well in the job!"
