PHOTO VIA NATIONAL BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL

A hard act to follow

Purple and Black . . . and hopefully snacks. Taking center stage in Winston-Salem this month is the National Black Theatre Festival, a show-stopping celebration of the talent and spirit of Black performers, designers, directors, producers and technicians, Aug. 1– 6. Brava!

The humidity plot thickens . . .

Calling all film freaks and movie geeks. Carolina Theatre is still bringin’ the heat (while you escape it) with its Summer Film Fest. Take a day off with Bueller at 7 p.m., Thursday, August 28, and grab the rest of the week's lineup here.

#Squadghouls

Hey, Boo! Text your ghoul-friends and skele-run to Lake Townsend Marina for a spook-tacular showing of Ghostbusters: Afterlife at 8:15 p.m., Saturday, July 30. It's sure to raise the spirits.

Ain't nothin' but a hound dog bookworm

W-A-L-K  to the Central Library so your kiddos can meet man's best tutor — Sammy, the treat-lovin', paws-itively encouraging dog — at 5 p.m. Monday, August 1. Reading can be ruff, but with a little lick and perseverance, the kids will grasp it.

Life’s never drab in drag

Con-drag-ulations, your summer reading list has just been yassified. Bring your best listening ears and criss-cross-applesauce as beauty queens read you a selection of banned books at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Scuppernong Books' Drag Queen Storytime.

The big "O" (XXX-rated)

Get a load of this JACKASS . . . star. Steve-O brings The Bucket List Tour to Greensbor-O's Carolina Theatre for a night of sexually-charged, potentially graphic and most certainly self-deprecating jokes and stunts, 7 p.m., Friday, July 29. For mature — or immature, depending on how ya look at it — audiences.

Written on the pages is . . .

. . . the answer to our neverending story: Central Library’s Literary Festival, a celebration of the Boro’s author half, bridging the gap between aspiring and seasoned writers alike. Take a page from us — enjoy an array of workshops and refreshments, 1–5 p.m., Saturday, July 30.

Party in the U.S.A.

The Greensboro History Museum is endorsing all your democratic desires with a game night of gerrymander madness and good ol’ political fun, featuring a food truck, brews and a DJ — but will a Jay-Z song be on? — at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 28.

It’s intern-ational love (so international!)

Calling all interns — not for a coffee run this time. Let's celebrate you and all the (ahem, unpaid) errands you’ve run with National Intern Day. Campus Greensboro is turning the tables and bringing the coffee — and food trucks, games and music — to you, 4:30–7 p.m., Friday, July 29, at Lebauer Park.

Music to our swimmer's ears

Greensboro’s got just what you need to get you through those hot summer nights, mid July. Let the rhythm move you on over the hump days of summer with the city's live music happenings.

  • A can for a band. That’s the deal that Music for a Mission is pitching with their evening of low brass and shaking some . . . canned goods in support of Spartan Open Pantry Ministry, 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 27.
  • Playing in the world-renowned venue of Country Park shelter #7, Nu Blu brings its bluegrass vibes just a walk in the park away at 6 p.m., Sunday, July 31. You're our boy, Blu.
  • The Beatles were so yesterday are forever. Yesterday: A Tribute to the Beatles invites all fans of rock ‘n’ roll to “Come Together” and “Twist and Shout” to the legendary musical legacy, 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 29, at the High Point Theatre.
  • Don’t be a Debbie Downer. Join host Demeanor at the Carolina Theatre for Debbie the Artist & Emanuel Wynter instead, bringing you the ma-jazz-tic sounds of blues, hip-hop and a professionally-strummed violin at 8 p.m., Sunday, July 31.

Born with it? Maybe it's maple leaves

Netflix and chill? More like trail mix and hills! Catch us outside — how 'bout dah? — as we explore all the flora, fauna and folklore Greensboro has to offer. Embrace your inner granola and hike the Chimney Run Trail with the fam at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 30.

Poll dancing

What’s a horse’s primary concern when voting? A stable economy! Ok, we’re done horsing around. It’s time for you to reign it in and stirrup some courage as you head down to booths for Greensboro’s general elections today. Read up on the yays and neighs of each candidate before galloping to the poll.
