Readings for Sunday, July 31

Micah 6:8 What does God require of you?
Luke 12:13-21 Being rich toward God

When we think about God being our moral compass, we could draw from many biblical texts, and people have done so over the centuries, sometimes for nefarious purposes. Slavery has been justified by pointing to the Bible. So has Manifest Destiny, which "justified" killing or putting on reservations all the Native Americans who stood in the way of European-Americans claiming the Promised Land of the West for development. But Micah 6:8 seems like a good guide for our moral compass: God asks us to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.

What about money and wealth? In Luke 12, a rich farmer has such an abundant harvest that he doesn't know where to store it all. He doesn't consider sharing it but wants to keep it all for himself. Is Jesus condemning all wealth? Or, if we have more than we need, does our moral compass guide us in how to use our abundance to be rich toward God and to build God's realm?

Please hold Art in your prayers as he undergoes surgery today.

Doors Are Sticking
Please be aware that the double doors off Prospect St have swollen and are currently not always closing and latching on their own. If you visit the building, you will need to give the door an extra push to close it upon exit or pull to close it upon entry. Trustees are working on a solution.

Action Alert from Be:Seattle

The City of Seattle is planning to sweep four different encampments during the heatwave this week, including a massive vehicle encampment on Tuesday with 50+ vehicles and 50-75 people living there.

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to exceed 90 degrees. We already know how dangerous these hot weather events can be for folks living outside, but now the city is going to exacerbate the issue by forcing all of the vulnerable people through a physically and emotionally exhausting eviction process when they have nowhere else for them to go.

Every sweep is cruel, but to show up during a heatwave and tow people's homes away without even so much as finding a parking lot where they could park instead is inhumane. We need the city to hear that this is beyond cruel and we won't stand for it.

Stop The Sweeps Seattle have created an email and call script for you to use as a template. Find it HERE.

Office Manager Karen Eisenbrey will be on vacation next week, August 2-5. During this time, voice mail will be checked for urgent messages. All other messages and email will be handled when Karen returns on August 9. Postal mail will be handled on August 12.

Donations of Cell Phones, Tablets, and Laptops Requested
Maryalice Power shares the following announcement:
"My daughter Dr. Julliette Power and her friend Irma Schneider, a nurse, are both going to Rwanda in September to help with medical care. They are working at the Adventist University of Central Africa to help refugees from the Congo to obtain education and be able to move out of a cycle of dependency living in the camps. They are reaching out to solicit people who have old cell phones, tablets, or laptops that they would be willing to donate to help the students. Please call or email me (206-324-2483 or maryalicepower@hotmail.com) and I will pick them up or come to the church. Thank you."

Witness for Justice
Act Now for Climate Justice
Rebekah Choate, Associate for Global Advocacy and Education, Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ

The last international trip I went on for work was to Southern Asia in January 2020. We traveled to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India. While there, we met many of our partners who are working on a variety of issues facing their communities. We heard about the work to recover from the civil war in Sri Lanka, the work against caste-based discrimination in India, and the climate adaptation work being done in Bangladesh.

We visited a coastal community in the south of Bangladesh that has established a local community learning center, which also doubles as a cyclone shelter. There, the farmers in the area learn about ways they can adapt their farming techniques to the changing climate realities. For example, they learn to use seeds that are more tolerant of salt, since they are seeing increased flooding during the rainy season that then leaves salt behind in the soil during the dry season. I could see the white salty deposits in one of the fields we visited. Another technique taught at the center is the use of old plastic bottles to create a hanging garden along a wall, which allows for more plants to be grown above the salty soil.

Climate change is a huge, existential problem facing us all as humans. It can be overwhelming to know what to do, what not to do, and how to act for lasting change. It can be so overwhelming that some people don’t even start. Many of our global partners are helping their communities adapt and confront climate change and we can act, too.
