Thursday, August 11 in West Seattle

Tour a local restoration project along Longfellow Creek in Seattle. Visit a streamside restoration project that uses native plants to revitalize an area once taken over by invasive weeds.

Saturday, August 27 on Vashon Island with WSU Forestry Extension

Washington State University Extension is partnering with King Conservation District on this field day which features hourly outdoor workshops and concludes with a Twilight Forest Tour on a Vashon resident’s forested property.

Delridge Area Residents Collaborate to Restore Longfellow Creek

Longfellow Creek flows 3+ miles through the urbanized Roxhill and Delridge neighborhoods of West Seattle and drains into the Duwamish River and still faces numerous challenges for salmon recovery. KCD assisted private landowners in the Delridge neighborhood with a buffer revegetation project in 2019. Join KCD staff for a tour on Thursday, August 11.

Maple Valley Small Forest Highlights Many Benefits

Vashon Forest Owners Field Day

Forests are a key part of the beauty and quality of life in the Puget Sound region, and sustaining healthy, functioning forests on the island requires careful stewardship. Owners of forested properties will build the necessary knowledge and skills for caring for their trees at the Vashon Island Forest Owners Field Day on Saturday, August 27, 11:30am to 4:00pm at Island Center Forest -188th Trailhead. It will be followed by a bring-your-own-picnic-dinner, and KCD’s Twilight Tour at a nearby forested property from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Washington State University Extension is partnering with King Conservation District for the field day which features hourly outdoor workshops covering topics such as maintaining healthy trees, protecting and enhancing wildlife habitat, proper thinning techniques, protecting homes from wildfire. Participants can choose which sessions to attend, as well as network with vendors, agency personnel, and other forest owners.

At 5:30pm, King Conservation District will host a Twilight Forest Tour on a Vashon resident’s forested property. Walking tour of the forest and discuss past treatments, forest health, and other management tools and considerations.

Participants who register ahead of time will save $10 on admission and tickets will be available at the gate. This event is kid-friendly and youth under 18 can attend for free. Additionally, special rates are available for students and Master Gardeners.

KCD Regional Food System Grant Application Window Now Closed

Grant applications were due July 18, 2022. Awards are expected to be announced in October.

KCD Community Agriculture Cover Crop Giveaway

Do you manage or work with a community garden and are you interested in improving soil health? Sign up today for our annual cover crop giveaway!

Cover crops increase soil organic matter and fertility, improve soil structure, suppress weeds, and reduce erosion and compaction. Plus, they produce beautiful, edible flowers that are a home and food source for pollinators!

All requests must be received by July 29. Pick-up or delivery dates are to be announced soon. Pick-up will be at KCD’s office in Renton.

NEW WSDA Local Food System Infrastructure Grants

Grant applications now open for new WSDA Local Food System Infrastructure Grants!

Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is offering Local Food System Infrastructure Grants to support local food system infrastructure, supply chains, and market access for farms, food processors, and food distributors. The funds are prioritized for small business owners, including those owned by women and marginalized community members.

There are 2 grant categories:

Small Projects
Grant amount: $15,000 to $250,000
Grant project timeline: Mid-September 2022 to June 30, 2023
Deadline to apply: August 10, 2022 11:59pm

Large Projects
Grant amount: $250,001 to $1,000,000
Grant project timeline: Mid-September 2022 to June 30, 2023
Deadline to apply: August 10, 2022 11:59pm

Urban Producers, Public Invited to Attend Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) encourages urban producers and others to attend the second public meeting of the Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production on August 5. The Committee will discuss new urban conservation practices, focus areas and priorities for the Commission, and the new Farm Service Agency (FSA) urban county committees, among other topics.

Rotational Grazing Treatments and Pasture Design Farm Walk

Bone Dry Ridge, Fagerness Dairy and Flying Cow Creamery

Join Thurston Conservation District, Ecostudies Institute and WSU South Sound Agriculture Program for a workshop with Selma Bjarnadottir and Keith Fagerness. learn about and see in action:

  • Birdsfoot trefoil used as an anti-worming (anthemintic) forage
  • How one grazing operation uses several approaches to paddock size and rest
  • Rotational grazing of sheep, dairy, and beef cows
  • Complete pasture establishment on an old vegetable field including soil testing, fertilization, tillage and seeding a new pasture mix

Vigor Habitat Restoration Tour

LLTK is partnering with Vigor and the University of Washington’s Wetland Ecosystem Team to study an innovative habitat restoration project at Vigor’s Harbor Island shipyard, assessing whether this approach can help improve outcomes for juvenile salmon. The project is currently in the active habitat construction stage. On behalf of LLTK and their partners, join them to tour the site and learn more about the project.
