Hubert Lignier 2019
A Spectacular Vintage From One of The All-Stars of the Cote de Nuits
Hubert Lignier's wines are quite simply among the best in Burgundy, and like all the elite domaines of the Cote de Nuits, his grand cru 2019s are quite simply as good as Burgundy gets. The 97-99 point rating for Hubert's reserve bottling, the Clos de la Roche 'MCMLV' is bettered only by Romanee Conti itself in 2019 and the rest of the range fall into line in the front rank of their peers.
These are elite wines from an established five-star producer in a vintage many consider to be the best of the millenium. Given the state of the market and the almost total lack of any wine to sell in 2021 this offer may look like an anachronism soon enough.
Hubert's style is classic. His wines are typically elegant and perfumed rather than powerhouses but grand cru is grand cru here and his Clos de la Roche lacks nothing in structure and concentration.
The 1er crus of Morey currently provide the very best value for their price on the entire Cote de Nuits. They are less celebrated than Chambolle to the south or Gevrey to the North but they compete well with Gevrey for quality and are much much cheaper than the 1er crus of Chambolle. The names may not be quite so familiar but, Riotte, Blanchards Chauffots, Chenevery and Clos Baulet are true 1er crus and will provide excellent and intoxicating Burgundy to those who can set them aside for another 5-20 years (or more.)
For a quick fix, the Morey Trilogie is a brialliant village level wine (how often do you see scores for an AC wine up at 92 or 94 points?!) The Chambolle Bussieres is better than many 1er crus from the village at twice the price.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 'MCMLV' 2019

97-99 points Vinous: " TThe 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru comes from the plot of vines planted by massale selection in 1955 that tends to produce tiny millerandé berries. Cropped at 18hl/ha it has a sublime bouquet with wonderful delineation, perhaps more floral than the regular cuvée, extremely well focused. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, an unerring sense of symmetry with a very harmonious, satin-textured finish that is so caressing. Interestingly, this comes in at 13.6° alcohol whilst the regular cuvée is 14.2°. This is a stunning snow-capped peak of the 2019 vintage. (Drink between 2025-2055)" Neal Martin
Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2019

96-99 points Inside Burgunduy: "The main bottling of Clos de la Roche comes from plots in Monts Luisants (2/3) and Fremières (1/3) The colour impresses with its deep core of crimson purple. There is a very light reduction to the nose before the raspberries start to come out with aeration. This is gorgeously sensual on the palate, and ticks all the boxes: elegance/finesse/density/ freshness. It will be very hard to beat this!" - Jasper Morris
96-98 points Vinous: " The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from the two terroirs, the majority from Mont Luisants and one-third from Fremières. The vines were planted in the Sixties and the late Fifties respectively. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, briary and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, concentrated as you would expect since it was cropped at around 25hl/ha with wonderful minerality on the finish. Outstanding. Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru 2019

92-94 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a lovely menthol-tinged bouquet, redcurrant and cranberry, light tertiary notes developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, white pepper and cumin. Lovely balance here, the new oak is well integrated. Just a pity, only two barrels were produced. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, very fresh and well defined, silky in texture with an understated yet very sustained and elegant finish. Bon vin! The palate is quite rich and generous, nicely structured, sweet towards the finish that manages to disguise the 14.7° alcohol. 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières 1er Cru comes from 0.50-hectares of 50-year-old vines and includes 30% whole bunches and is aged in 20% new oak. It has a well defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, sage and light <em>sous-bois</em> aromas. The palate is classic in style, fresh with chalky tannins, zippy acidity and a surprisingly strict finish that might be just going through a prenatal dumb phase. Old vines planted by Laurent’s grandfather. Dense purple, the heady nose usefully tramelled by the light reduction. Good grip on the palate, more tension maybe than Très Girard above.
