VC Awards - Kristy Adams Award for Excellence in Health and Safety

In 2022 this award was renamed in memory of Kristy Adams, whose dedication and passion for health and safety made her a highly respected team member of the WHS Unit. Through this award, UOW recognises her invaluable contribution providing a safe environment for the UOW community.

A huge congratulations to The Discovery Space Team in winning this years Kristy Adams Award for Excellence in Health and Safety. The Discovery Space Team is made up of the following staff:

  • Liam Buckley
  • Liz Depers
  • Grant Strangman
  • Vanessa Johnson
  • Carly Antonelli
  • Rebecca Rivinoja
The Discovery Space Team have been commited to continuing links to community and managing strict COVID-19 and WHS protocols whilst providing a tactile hands on service. The difficulty in implementing safe practices in this environment and dedication of staff who are still going through extensive protocols everyday to ensure safety for all visitors and staff made them very worthy of winning this award.

Mental Health Training

The Mental Health Awareness and Mental Health Leaderhip Program training programs facilitated by local psychology at work organisation Business Grit are recommencing in a face to face capacity next month. Staff feedback from these two training programs has been extremely positive, with staff stating "Great course - very practical and useful" and "Created a safe space to discuss and ask questions".

To enrol in either of these training programs, please visit Unified Learning.

UOW COVID-19 Safety Measures

As per the COO UOW COVID-19 update (20/07/2022), there are increasing case numbers of the new COVID-19 B.A4 and B.A5 strains, posing a risk to the community.

Given that the University’s guiding principle throughout the pandemic has been to return to on-campus activities while following public health guidance, CMT are continuing to monitor the public health situation and pay close attention to state and national health experts.
Following precautions to minimise the spread of the virus is about protecting others in our communities, especially those who are vulnerable. Please take the time to re-familiarise yourself with the UOW COVID Safe plan and take these simple measures, including:
  • Staying home if you are unwell
  • Wearing a mask indoors when in a space where there are other people, and when outoors where physical distancing is impossible
  • Staying up to date with vaccinations
  • Practising good hand hygiene.
See the below links for the most up to date information:

Smoke-Free Campus

In July 2016, UOW implemented a Smoke-Free University Policy which has been successful in eliminating the harmful risks of smoking and maintaining our beautiful campus. Seven years on, let us offer you a brief refresher:

How to Approach Someone
If you see someone smoking in a non-designated smoking area on campus, you are encouraged to respectfully and politely let them know that they are required to comply with the University’s smoke-free requirements. You’ll have a much better chance of a positive outcome. If you are not confident please send an email to smoke-free@uow.edu.au and we can monitor the area to help with compliance.

Resources
The University's Grand Pacific Health Centre GP's are aware of the Smoke-Free policy and are ready to assist. In addition, staff can use the Employee Assistance Program services and students can talk to the Student Wellbeing team about quit options.
Smokers can also contact the Quitline on 137848 or visit the Quit website www.quit.org.au. For more smoke free resources, please visit the Smoke-Free UOW page.

Vaping
Research has indicated that the chemicals in e-cigarettes and their vapour are harmful so they are also precluded from use on campus.

For more information, please visit the UOW Smoke-Free webpage.

SafetyNet Training

Reporting hazards and incidents assists with the achievement of a healthy and safe work environment by ensuring that all identified hazards can be brought to the attention of personnel who can eliminate or minimise any health and safety risks to an acceptable level. The University uses the online system SafetyNet to manage hazard and incident reporting.

SafetyNet can be used to:

  • Report incidents/hazards
  • Complete risk assessment and safe work procedures
  • Record workplace inspection corrective actions

Staff can complete the above actions by logging in to SafetyNet via the UOW Safe@Work page.

The SafetyNet test environment exists to allow users to practice entering information for hazard and incident reports, risk assessments, safe work procedures, and workplace inspection hazards without saving into the live system. Once within the test environment, you can navigate across all web forms as desired.

For assistance in completing the online forms, staff can refer to the UOW SafetyNet User Guide or the Videos online.
