Combating Metastatic Cancer Through Blood Draw

Fischell Institute researcher Xiaoming (Shawn) He (BIOE) and his lab's co-manager, Elyahb A. Kwizera (BIOE), developed a new technique to capture, scale up, and analyze circulating tumor cells – one of the primary culprits in metastatic cancer.

The team hopes that their approach can be used to understand why and how certain cancers spread and that resulting findings could one day lead to new personalized therapeutic options.

He and Kwizera are working with University of Maryland School of Medicine Professor Katherine Tkaczuk, M.D., to apply their work toward metastatic cancer research. The team’s developments were published this month in ACS Nano.
