Teen/Tween Programs August 2022
Meet Erik Carlson, our new Library Director!

Erik started working in libraries as a Summer intern at WLS in 2006. In 2011 Erik started working in the White Plains Public Library in order to build a teen audience for an upcoming renovation that included a teen room. When the room opened, it was a huge success and was packed with teenagers! The teen room at WPPL became an important place for many teens in the area. Some of them spent a lot of time after school socializing, playing video games, attending programs, and sometimes doing homework there.

Earlier this year Erik applied for the Executive Director position at DFPL. He is very excited about working in Dobbs Ferry and bringing some of his ideas to a new library!

Other than libraries and makerspaces, Erik likes to play tennis, hike, ski and snowboard, ride a motorcycle, and watch soccer (Leeds United and NYCFC are his favorite teams). He looks forward to meeting and working with the community. His door is open, when he is at work, so come by and introduce yourselves.

Summer Reading is June 27 through August 19!

This page will tell you everything you need to know about participating if your child is between the ages of 3 and 12. (Younger kids might want to take on the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge; teens might want to check out Irvington or Greenburgh's summer reading programs!)

Have questions? Email our children’s librarian, Ms. Gina, at dobchildref@wlsmail.org, call her up at (914) 693-6615, or drop by the library to talk to her anytime!

Virtual Program: Navigating College Admissions Successfully
October 12, October 25, & November 16, 7:00 PM (come to one session)

We are offering this Zoom presentation to help families understand how COVID has changed the college admissions landscape and how it affects Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen. We will discuss current college admissions trends, the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find schools that can be a good fit for your child, a timeline and other action steps that can be taken to make this school year productive and help reduce the stress around the college admissions process. We’ll examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. We will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and a way to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others. This program is recommended for parents and their high school teens.
The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC
Register for: October 12 / October 25 / November 16
