This year we are shaking up our post-conference summer communications by providing you with highlights from our Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists in a concise format.
First off, a hearty thank you to all who participated in the many Conference sessions! With over 450 registrants, we were happy so many people devoted their time to our third consecutive online conference.

New member cohort pushes GYA representation to over 100 countries!
The 2022 new GYA member cohort is comprised of 39 new members and includes representatives from 24 individual countries, from all GYA general disciplines, and includes 19 females, 19 males and 1 who prefers not to say.
In addition to helping the GYA maintain its gender parity benchmarks, the new member cohort has increased the GYA's international representation by 2 countries, i.e., Mongolia and Greece.

GYA members choose new leadership
GYA members elected leaders hailing from North America, Africa, Asia and Europe – a majority of whom are women – to the 2022/23 Executive Committee.
As Co-Chairs for the upcoming year, members chose Priscilla Kolibea Mante (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana) and Prosper Ngabonziza (Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Germany). Prosper served as a member of the EC last year.
Further EC members are as follows: Michael Backes (University of Namibia); Cristina Blanco Sío-López (Ca’Foscari University of Venice, Italy); Encieh Erfani (IASBS, Iran); Sri Fatmawati (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia); Alma Cristal Hernández-Mondragón (Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico); Monika Kędra (Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland): Felix Moronta Barrios (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Italy); Arya Shalini Subash (Institute of Chemical Technology, India; and Filippo Rossi (Politecnico di Milano, Italy).

Anti-discrimination focal area continues
At the General Assembly session in June 2022, GYA members voted to extend the Focus Area group on Addressing Systemic Discrimination for another year. The group had initially been set up at the AGM 2020. For the next year, they plan to organise an Anti-discrimination training course for GYA members, likely in connection with the 2023 AGM in Rwanda.

GYA activities group updates
The Activities Groups have had a busy few weeks around the AGM, with public satellite events (e.g., Trust in (Young) Scientists SCISO project, the At-Risk Scholars Initiative public Pre-AGM session, the Science Advice for Policy Making Workshop, and the Rainbow Group Poster Exhibition), two networking sessions on Wonder, as well as internal group meetings to integrate new members, select new co-leads, and formulate plans for upcoming months.
A number of groups are now already planning activities for the 2023 AGM (e.g. Science Advice, Science + Art = Peace and Justice), or are busy planning various projects and contributions, (e.g., the Science Diplomacy in the Americas), or plan to attend the 2023 CILAC, or the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP-15).

GYA creates new Alumni Plus category
The Alumni Plus policy is based on what some young academies the world over have been doing to cope with the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. GYA members approved this newly-created policy during the General Assembly on 16 June 2022. This year’s outgoing members were then given the option of choosing whether to become GYA alumni now, or to rather stay on as Alumni Plus for one further year to finish a particular project, or to stay on as a group co-lead and ensure a smooth transition to new co-leads in the coming months.

GYA Office capacity lessened in July/August 2022
With staff members being on alternating leave during July and August, the GYA Office will remain open throughout, though with a somewhat reduced capacity. For urgent matters, you can always email info@globalyoungacademy.net

Upcoming events to engage with
13-30 September 2022
Science Summit at the 77th United Nations General Assembly
The Science Summit will include young scholars from around the world to discuss the topics of the Summit from the perspective of early-career researchers. Moreover, the GYA can have 2-3 speakers in the opening ceremony itself. The EC is currently considering multiple approaches.

Executive Committee in-Person meeting
After three years of virtual meetings, the EC In-Person meeting will actually take place in-person this September. If you have any suggestions for topics for your new EC to take up, please contact info@globalyoungacademy.net.

2023 GYA Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists
After three years of virtual meetings, the 2023 GYA AGM will take place in-person in Kigali, Rwanda, from 5-9 June 2023, in connection with the International Conference of Young Scientists on the topic “Technological Innovations for Discovering Solutions to the World's Greatest Current Challenges”.
