Oh, hi friends!

My brain has a habit of going completely blank at the worst moments. Someone asks me, “What are your favorite movies?” or “Have you read anything good lately?” My mind goes blank, completely dead.

The same thing happens when I start thinking about who I might know for a collaboration or to chat with about a new project or any number of things.

I ask myself, Who do I know?

The answer: No one!

Now, that’s not true. I know people…you know people, too.

There’s the college roommate of a friend who was at the book party. Your coworker from 10 years ago who changed industries. The brilliant business brain who’s in your running group.

To help boost my own memory capabilities, I started an Excel doc and put in the names of all the actors I’ve met and worked with and followed over the years. Tedious? Kind of. But I only have to do it once, and simply keep adding. And the next time I want to have a reading or record a demo, I can go to one source — one that I created — and remember who I already know.

If you want to do something new, or find some help, maybe start by making a list.

Who do you know?

I bet it’s more people than you think.

1. Upon entering the store, write down at the reception desk how many words and by what time you are going to write your manuscript.

2. The manager asks you every hour how your manuscript is coming along.

3. You are not allowed to leave the store until you have finished writing your manuscript or writing project.

Tokyo’s manuscript writing cafe won’t let you leave until you finish your novel. (h/t A.J. Freeman)

Terrifying? Wonderful? A little of both? (But really, an example of the wonders of defining your goals, having accountability, and the threat of living in a cafe forever unless you get your words down.

What’s aggressively on my mind today!
