News for the living.

We are getting ready to release our second film!

Saying Goodbye: Preparing for Death is the next instalment of the When You Die trilogy. Director, Johanna Lunn, guides us on a journey that explores questions most of us avoid: What is a good death? Could we possibly heal old emotional wounds as death approaches? Where do we want to die? What quality of life is enough for you? What is a conscious death, and could we do it? Making decisions now about what we want when faced with death, is a great kindness to ourselves, and to our loved ones. And it lessens our fear of death.

We will have more to share on this topic in the fall newsletter, but in the meantime, check out some of our new website features!

Introducing our Virtual Bookshelf

On our resources page, we have books on various death-related topics that many have found to be helpful. Starting now, we will highlight one every month. It's sort of like a book club, but without the commitment. In some cases, we will accompany the book with a podcast conversation with the author. We're always adding to the bookshelf and welcome your suggestions.

This summer we highlight work by Barbara Karnes, RN, an internationally respected speaker, educator, author, and top guide on matters of end-of-life.

While present at the bedside of hundreds of people during the dying process, hospice pioneer Karnes noticed that each death was following a near-identical scenario. More here!

Recipes for Remembrance

Food can bring back good memories. The very smell of something cooking or baking can remind us of the person who made our favourite dish. And when that person has gone, it’s even more special. Recipes for Remembrance is a new monthly feature on the WYD website. We would love for you to share your favorite memories and dishes with us. It could be something your dearly departed used to make or something they loved to eat. Tell us about them. Let's share the memory. We already know the secret ingredient is love. Send your recipe to programs@whenyoudie.org

And check out Nana's Banana Bread, shared by one of our team members. Read the full article here >>

Helping Others with the Loss of a Child, with James Morgan

When James and Caitie Morgan's baby son died suddenly, they were plunged into the depths of a grief that had no bottom. The lifeline they found came to them from other parents who had also experienced this heartbreak. Wishing to be helpful to others walking through grief, James devised a plan for an app that would connect grieving people with others who could help them navigate the difficult times. And the Buddys app was born. Listen to our podcast here.

IANDS to host sneak preview of Saying Goodbye in September!

We will be attending the IANDS Conference in Salt Lake City (Aug 31st-Sept 4th) this year, where our next film, Saying Goodbye: Preparing for Death, will be part of the conference. It will be followed by a panel discussion with producer/director Johanna Lunn. Johanna will be joined in conversation with end-of-life doula, Anastasia Hernandez; Rebecca Good, RN, MA, LPC, SLC and hospice nurse; and hospice assistant, Jennifer Dean. The screening will take place Sunday, September 4, 2022.

IANDS’ purpose is to promote responsible, multi-disciplinary exploration of near-death and similar experiences, their effects on people’s lives, and their implications for beliefs about life, death, and human purpose.
