PASA Summer News

What should the future of afterschool look like? Who should decide the answer? PASA is participating in the Every Hour Counts Powered by Youth initiative. In partnership with Young Voices, high school youth  recently kicked off a yearlong project to reimagine afterschool and youth-led initiatives, with opportunities to engage with cohorts of young people from Chicago, Kalamazoo, Flint, Nashville, and Palm Beach County to envision the future of out-of-school programs in their communities.

The youth of Young Voices will work collaboratively with PASA's staff throughout the project, to hone their recommendations and see through plans for creating engaging and enriching youth-driven afterschool programs, both in Providence and across the country. PASA is committed to expanding youth voice and leadership opportunities across our organization, and we can't wait to hear their proposals.

All the best for an enjoyable summer,

Ann Durham
Executive Director

The AfterZone Adventure Camp is in full swing, engaging youth in visual and performing arts, environmental and maker space programs, plus daily swimming lessons. Middle-schooler Jeremiah (pictured) learned to swim just days before this gleeful photo was taken. In addition to building a life-saving skill, swimming contributes to social skills, mental development and confidence, and we are proud to have swimming lessons as a core aspect of this summer's Adventure Camp.

PASA's Hub high school youth are immersed in a paid summer program designed to build business skills, and lifelong success. Focusing on financial literacy and entrepreneurship, Hub participants are learning directly from industry professionals. Fidelity, one of the Hub Financial Literacy Camp's sponsors, recently hosted the participants for a workplace tour (pictured).

On Friday, July 29, Miss Rhode Island, Elaine Collado, will kick off our end of AfterZone celebration held at the Fox Point Boys & Girls Club. The day-long celebration will include an exciting swim meet, a lunchtime barbeque, and challenging field games to close the camp season. As a result of her life-changing experience as an AfterZone participant, Miss Collado has chosen PASA as her platform when she competes for Miss USA in October. We wish her the best of luck!

AND A GOOD ROUND
WAS HAD BY ALL!
The PASA Golf Open was held on Wednesday, May 18, with lovely spring weather and new and old supporters teeing off at Agawam Hunt. PASA Executive Director Ann Durham kicked off the awards ceremony, and was joined by Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner who spoke about the importance of quality afterschool opportunities. PASA alumnus Ty'Relle Stephens passionately recalled how Hub programs helped him build the leadership skills that led him to serve on the Providence School Board. PASA is grateful to all the golfers who came out and helped us raise funds to continue this essential work.

We are off to an exciting start for the upcoming school year. We are seeking Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from those interested in offering inspiring and enriching learing opportunities for Providence youth.
