Bonzo Platycerium, 50+ years old!!!
Platycerium (AKA staghorn fern) is a genus of specialized fern that grows on the trunks of trees. Its basal fronds form an inverted cup that protect its roots from damage. This "root cup" also catches rainwater and leaves from above for nutrients. In cultivation, without a trunk to cling to, old Platys will grow into a brain-warping living chandelier best hung from the branch of an old tree or a garden veranda. Insanely rare to find a mature Platycereum orb at this size.

Tips: Hose water your freakish eye candy once or twice a week from the top until its root mass is saturated, then hose wash the leaves. A banana peel tossed into its root cup every now and then is a special treat for your Platy.

Pseudobombax ellipticum
Pseudobombax ellipticum is a tree prized for its peculiar green fissured stem, and its “shaving brush” flowers. Now I know what you're thinking. How is this rotund little freak "a tree"? Well my friend, this is no ordinary Pseudobombax. This Yoda has spent her scores of years under the wise tutelage of a bonsai master. Though gnarled and unimposing, she's powerful and not to be fucked with. You have been warned.
The species hails from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, and is very easy to grow in our So Cal climate.

Tips: She loves bright sun during the first half of the day, and frequent water when her leaves are in active growth, like three times a week.

Adenium aribicum (red flower)
The grower of this
inimitable objet d'art is to Adenium what Merlin was to magic. An Arizona-based mad scientist who’s spent 4+ decades selectively breeding plants in this genus for what he considers “ideal flower expression”. After almost half a century of dogged single-mindedness, he now sits atop the old catbird seat as the greatest grower of Adeniums the world has ever known.  This a special red flower variety of aribicum.

Tips: A. aribicum likes bright sun light during the first half of the day, heat, airflow, and regular water when its leaves are actively growing. Just make sure the soil is completely dry between waterings. During winter, when your Adenium is leafless and the weather is cold, keep it mostly dry, adding just a bit of moisture once a month to preserve root suppleness.

Pachypodium lamerei (crested)
This tree is a bonafide curiosity. A mutation of the much-adored Pachypodium lamerei, from Madagascar. Normally a bottle-shaped thorny tree with a plumeria-like flower, when “crested”, this thing goes haywire, with branches and leaves that grow atop the filigreed ridges of its odd flattened stem, making it look more candelabrine (made that word up) than planty. Truly the gold-standard of crested Pachys, an aristocrat with the heart of a warrior.

TIps: Caring for your green goblin is simple. Give it a sunny spot, stick it in the ground or in a pot, and drench once a week.

Pseudolithos cubiformis
From NE Somalia, this weird little succulent looks like an alien turd with the skin of an Iguana. Its fuzzy little flowers smell like rotting flesh (or like alien turds) to attract its favorite pollinator, flies. Though a connoisseur’s fave, Pseudolithos are not for the faint of heart. In the words of one frustrated collector, “Generally easy to grow, but mistakes are costly. Once rot sets in, there’s neither time nor warning before it turns to putrid mush”.
IS YOUR HEART FAINT, OR IS IT BOLD LIKE A TIGER?

Tips: Plant in pure pumice and water every 3 days at dusk during the growing season. Keep bone dry during the cold months. Pseudolithos like bright filtered sunlight, and they loooovvveee heat!
Price: $125 ea.
