Director’s Letter
Greetings!
Community outreach in the mandatory buyout areas has been tremendous this year. In the first six months of 2022, we conducted 15 different outreach initiatives, from mailing postcards and newsletters to canvassing communities and hosting resource fairs – all with the goal of ensuring that residents of buyout communities receive the latest information about the program and get answers to any questions they have about their case.
In June, the Allen Field community invited Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and members of Harris County’s Community Services Department and Flood Control District to a community meeting at Mision Cristiana Casa Del Rey to discuss the buyout program. That meeting was followed by a Resource Fair on June 25th at the Hardy Senior Center in Precinct 2, where Allen Field residents were able to meet one-on-one with Relocation Specialists to learn about the program benefits available to them.
A Resource Fair for all buyout neighborhoods is scheduled for July 23rd in Aldine. We will have staff onsite to answer questions and provide case status updates for both owners and renters. You’ll find more information about that Resource Fair in this newsletter.
Additionally, we are using a mobile office to bring Relocation Specialists into neighborhoods one week each month through the summer. To date, the unit has been located outside of Greens Road Mobile Home Community. Plans are to move it around to other buyout communities in coming months.
Thanks to these initiatives, and to the grassroots efforts of neighbors and advocacy groups like Houston Department of Transformation and Texas Organizing Project, an increasing number of residents are gaining comfort with the program, moving through the offer process and into the relocation stage, where they are choosing homes to fit their needs outside of the floodway. To date, nearly 35 residents have completed the buyout/relocation process and settled into their new homes, More than 144 residents have accepted their offers and are in the relocation process.
If you have not yet spoken to a Relocation Specialist, please give us a call so we can help you move also into your new home as well. To be connected to a Specialist, please call 832-927-4961 or email RebuildHarris@csd.hctx.net.
