  Service To Reflect County Heritage
Cumbria’s heritage will be strongly reflected at the forthcoming consecration of the new Suffragan Bishop of Penrith.

The Rev Canon Rob Saner-Haigh, will be consecrated in a service at 11am at York Minster tomorrow (Friday 15 July), marking a return to the Diocese of Carlisle where, until 2020, he served all his ministry.

Rob will wear a silver Bishop’s ring, which includes a tiny gold cross of St Cuthbert - a famed northern saint - and which will include the engraving ‘Robert, a servant of Jesus Christ’.

Members of the congregation of Kendal Parish Church (KPC) where he served as vicar for 10 years have gifted him a wooden pectoral cross - worn around the neck - and which has been fashioned from Cumbrian oak by Staveley-based furniture company Peter Hall and Son.

And the Diocese of Newcastle – where he served for two years as Residentiary Canon Director of Mission and Ministry – has gifted him a Bishop’s crozier (a staff) with a handle fashioned from the horn of a Herdwick sheep.

Ordination Of Deacon
Please hold Matthew Richards in your prayers as he prepares to be ordained Deacon in a service at St Kentigern's Aspatria tonight (Thursday 14 July) at 6.30pm.

Matthew was unable to attend the ordination of Deacons service at Carlisle Cathedral last month as he was best man at his best friend's wedding (at which his mother also officiated). Bishop James gave his blessing for the ordination to take place at a later date.

Matthew has been drawn to pioneering ministry and for the last three years has trained with Church Mission Society at Cuddesdon, whilst also continuing to minister in Stoke on Trent and provide chaplaincy at a YMCA. He and his wife Saskia will live in Aspatria and he will serve Solway Plain Mission Community

    A Special Prayer For Ordinands

Please do use this special prayer for all our ordinands and their families in the year ahead.

Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer God,
who you call your faithful people into a life of service,
help us to nurture and hold in love
all those who are ordained at this time in the life of your Church.
Teach us your ways,
that we might recognise your Mission in the world,
your compassion in caring for others,
and your love deep within every human heart.
We ask this in your Holy Name,
as one undivided Trinity of love,
now and for evermore. Amen

Energy Footprint Tool
A final reminder to complete the Energy Footprint Tool, before it closes on Sunday 31 July.

Completing the EFT means that you will know the carbon footprint of your church and we will know the carbon footprint of churches in the Diocese, both important targets in the Routemap to Net Zero Carbon, recently endorsed by General Synod.

If you are an Eco Church, calculating your carbon footprint will also get you some points!

     Synod Approves Net Zero Plan

Meanhwile, this week the Church of England’s General Synod has endorsed detailed plans designed to help the Church to reach net zero carbon by 2030.

The Routemap to Net Zero Carbo by 2030 published last month, encourages cathedrals, churches, schools and theological education institutions to make changes to their day-to-day activities to reduce carbon emissions.

In February 2020, General Synod voted to adopt the ambitious target of 2030, and following a widespread consultation with parishes, dioceses, cathedrals, and the wider Church, the Routemap was drawn up by members of the Environment Working Group.

Synod was shown a short film highlighting successful examples of net zero carbon churches and schools. It came from a series of short films which show projects from across the country, ranging from heat pumps in rural Cumbria to solar panels in central London.
