Dear <<First Name>>, here is the National eResearch Newsletter.
National eResearch Newsletter - August 2022
Message from AeRO:

AeRO very much regrets that, due to recent events, the difficult decision has been made to postpone the 12th National AeRO Forum scheduled to take place in Sydney on 26th July.  We will seek to re-schedule the event at a later date, and will endeavour to accommodate selected content in an eResearch and AI/ML stream at the upcoming eResearch Australasia Conference.  AeRO will contact all registered attendees to confirm the cancellation and refund process.  We also would value any feedback about the proposed topic (AI/ML & eResearch), with the aim of rescheduling the Forum in the first half of 2023.

In the meantime, please note that submissions to the eResearch Australasia Conference (Brisbane 17-21 October), for all categories of session except Posters, close TODAY, 15-Jul-22.

Survey about Data Steward Career Tracks:  by 20-Oct
The RDA Professionalising Data Stewardship Interest Group is conducting a survey on Data Steward Career Tracks.  Research Data Management (RDM) professionals like Data Stewards are playing an increasingly vital role in research practices.  However, such role has not been recognized as a profession in the academic system.

With this survey, we would like to better understand the current and future career perspectives of people who were/are hired as Data Stewards or work(ed) in similar RDM support roles, and seek participants (volunteers) who would like to provide more insightful input.

The survey can be accessed here (https://bit.ly/DSCareerTracks), and is open until 20-Oct-22.
CeRDI’s Online Farm Trials
Online Farm Trials (OFT) is a web-based system providing access to on-farm, or field based, cropping research trial data.  Recent work has been undertaken to increase the FAIRness of this data - to make it more Findable, Accessible, Reusable and Interoperable.  OFT has been extended to allow the rich metadata stored for trials to be harvested by Research Data Australia (RDA).  Over 5,000 farm trials are now findable through RDA.  In addition, a standardised list of treatment and crop types is available to support contributors entering data on the portal.  This will also increase the findability of OFT data.

Using 3D Models to Improve Health Outcomes
Saliva plays a vital role in oral health, serving to lubricate and protect the oral mucosa and facilitate mastication and swallowing, as well as contributing to the initial digestion of food.  At the University of Auckland, researchers have been developing a multiscale model of saliva secretion as part of an international collaboration.  To support that work, they called upon New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) staff Chris Scott and Maxime Rio to help tackle two challenges: developing an accurate 3D model of a salivary gland, and developing and implementing a mathematical model of saliva secretion.

Using AARNet Optical Fibre to Map Earthquakes in Australia
Scientists at the Australian National University, RMIT and the University of Adelaide are using a testbed of optical fibre provided by AARNet, called the Australian Lightwave Infrastructure Research Testbed (ALIRT), to explore new ways to measure earthquakes more accurately.  The optical fibre network that runs underground across Australia, which AARNet uses to deliver high-speed internet and other network services to the research and education sector, is very sensitive to vibration, making it an option for recording the Earth’s tremors as a cost-effective alternative to traditional seismometers.

Data-Enabled Research Future for Australia
To uplift our national data capabilities for researchers, the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) partnered with the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) and the five Learned Academies to enable more data-driven research and decision making across all fields of research.

6 reports have been released that provide insights into the ripe opportunities for progressing and driving Australian research and innovation through data, and guidance on how governments, industry and research institutions can achieve this.

FAIR Principles for Research Software Released
The Research Software Alliance (ReSA) is pleased to announce the release of version 1.0 of the FAIR Principles for Research Software (FAIR4RS Principles), after about 2 years of work by over 500 people.  This work has been organized by the FAIR4RS Working Group, which was jointly convened by the RDA, ReSA, and FORCE11.

Similar to the FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship, the goal of the FAIR4RS Principles is to improve the sharing and reuse of research software, by making it Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

UQ’s Unique Plan to Keep New Supercomputer Up To Date
The University of Queensland has purchased a new supercomputer to replace three current high-performance computers (HPCs) and has a unique plan to keep the new computer up to date.

The new HPC, named ‘Bunya’ after the native Queensland tree, can perform across a wide range of research domains, from sciences to humanities.

UQ will take advantage of changes in the computer component industry, allowing the university to upgrade by technology layers. This approach will enable UQ to replace things as needed without overhauling components that are still performing well.
