Barbaresco 2019 – Looking Great

Barbaresco Roncaglie, Poderi Colla

Fans of traditionally made Barbaresco (and Barolo!) should not overlook Poderi Colla, an estate than in my views continues to somewhat mysteriously fly under the radar. - Antonio Galloni

I had heard early reports that 2019 was shaping up to be an outstanding vintage in Piedmont and the recent article on Jancis Robinson's website, by Italian specialist, Walter Speller reinforces this. He talks about an exceptionally mild winter, which was followed by plentiful rain throughout spring. An extreme heat spike in June was followed by much more temperate conditions in July. Throughout the remainder of the summer and into autumn, diurnal temperatures enjoyed broad ranges, with regular and beneficial rainfall. As Speller puts it: "Those who sat out this nail-biting period were rewarded with grapes with plenty of fresh acidity, complexity and not excessive alcohol".

The highest rated wine in Speller's article for Jancis Robinson is from a producer that Antonio Galloni has been referencing for a number of years as 'under the radar'. I just tasted it myself and I can see why both tasters are so enthusiastic. It's one to buy now, before everyone catches on, especially at the early bird price of £210 per 6 in bond.

The colour is that unmistakable pale red brick so typical of Nebbiolo. There’s plenty of energy on the nose. Elegant rose petal perfume mingles with poignant fresh ginger, orange zest, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a dash of hoisin. The palate is full and bold, with rich layers of ripe summer strawberry and red cherry, slowly fading to leave rosewater, lavender, and violet. A long mineral streak provides definition from start to very long finish. The tannins are impressively fine-grained yet, together with mouth-watering acidity, provide a firm structure that will benefit from extended cellaring. This is a succulent and moreish drop already but has the capacity to improve for a good twenty years. Faultlessly harmonious and effortlessly elegant; it’s too good to miss. 2024-2042

Barbaresco. Palish ruby. Embryonic, tight nose with savoury minerally hints and just a shimmer of red fruit. A core of sweet raspberry fruit framed by firm, ripe and polished tannins. Spectacular tannic structure that is totally captivating and with youthful, focused red fruit. 2024-2036

The Vintage:

In the last couple of months I tasted my way through quite a few 2019 Barbaresco samples that were so good that it seems 2019 could be in the same league as the outstanding 2010 and 2016 vintages... Elegance is the key word in understanding the 2019 Barbaresco vintage, which continues along the stylistic road embarked on back in 2016 in a most convincing way. If consistently high quality throughout is a characteristic of a truly great vintage, 2019 has this in spades.

So far, I have only tasted a small selection of 2019s. Those wines point to an extremely promising vintage. The 2019s are deep, layered Barbarescos that show the heights of what is possible here. The growing season was marked by two heat events in late June and early July that helped fill out the wines, but not to excess, while the end of the year was pretty much textbook, with good diurnal shifts leading to a late harvest. It is too early to have a complete view of the vintage, but the lack of adverse weather shocks combined with the presence of favorable weather throughout the year, plus the strength of the wines I have tasted, all lead me to be extremely optimistic about the 2019s.

For some reason, Poderi Colla remains under the radar relative to their peers despite having made a number of superb wines in recent
vintages. Perhaps the winery location, just outside of Alba, explains that. I am not really sure. As for the wines, they are fabulous expressions of traditionally crafted Barbaresco and Barolo.
- Antonio Galloni, October 2020

Poderi Colla is about understatement and class. Rarely showy or flamboyant, the wines have a self-assuredness that is the result of many decades of experience working with some of the best vineyard sites in Piedmont. The estate is located in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, just outside Alba, but the vineyard holdings are scattered across a wider perimeter that encompasses Barbaresco and Monforte. - Antonio Galloni, December 2015
