One of the most tragic parts of the June murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous advocate Bruno Pereira is that it wasn’t unique.
It followed a template that has become a norm for the deaths of people protecting the environment in contested parts of the world: planned, threatened, taken to the authorities, and nevertheless occurring just as the killers said it would.
On the one hand, it says a lot about the value we place on different lives that it took a high-profile murder to have this issue to make headlines.
But on the other hand, the public awareness raised by this killing might finally be enough to force change in these patterns.
In the words of a Brazilian lawyer we interviewed who’s been following such murders for years: “I think people have to take advantage of this moment to transform this anger that we feel about what’s happening into action.”
“We cannot just say this can’t happen anymore.”
