Cleveland has resurrected its Urban Forestry Commission tasked with increasing the tree canopy of the city. Once known as “The Forest City,” Cleveland now has about 14% canopy cover and hopes to increase that to 40%.

The western Lake Erie summer algae bloom is expected to be rated 3.5, thus lower than last year’s 6 on account of farmers’ efforts and lower rainfall. Click on: reports Peter Krouse.

Sailing. Cleveland hosted Cleveland Race Week, a sailing regatta June 15-26. In addition, the Cleveland Tall Ships Festival spotlighted tall ships July 7-10 in the harbor.

Cleveland celebrated Juneteenth with a Freedom Festival, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Celebration and an Annual Fun Run.

Cleveland recently commemorated with a plaque on Euclid Avenue what has become known as The Cleveland Summit of June 4, 1967 when Black athletes and dignitaries met to show solidarity with Muhammad Ali’s objection to the Vietnam War. Present then were Jim Brown, Bill Russell, Lew Alcindor, Bobby Mitchell, Carl Stokes and more, all risking backlash for supporting Ali.  Click on: Marc Bona reports.
