Forty years ago
When Guadalcanal Campaign released people were singing Come on Eileen and Eye of the Tiger, the 49ers were at their peak, E.T. and Conan the Barbarian were hitting theaters; but above all, computer gaming was very far from being a far-reaching activity that embraced multiple generations across the entire planet. A few developers from the silicon valley were taking baby steps to forge the future of entertainment, pioneering an industry and turning hobbies into proper jobs. The boundaries of development, publishing, and distribution were blurred, players were consuming games in a way that we’d consider alien nowadays. I still find it amazing that in such a landscape wargames had the opportunity to emerge as part of a tiny, unstructured, experimental market.
