Recently a friend shared the bountiful harvest of his garden with me – beautiful tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, purple onions, potatoes, and more.  Last winter, during the harsh time of Imbolc, he was so excited about the coming sowing time, and now, in the sweltering heat and humidity of summer, he is just as excited about Lammas, the reaping time.  In between, however, was lots of hard work, lots of hope, and lots of prayer.

It is the alchemy, the magic, the science, and most of all, the blessings of the cycle of growth that nourishes us.  In those days when we pray for rain, and then those days when we pray for the rain to stop, we learn to honor the cycles and spinning of the seasons and the cycles we carry within ourselves.

Poet and lyricist Robert Hunter wrote, “Whichever way your pleasure tends, if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind.  Wildflower seed on the sand and wind, may the four winds blow you home again.” 

These lines resonate deep in my soul.  I know that what I plant in my heart is what I will reap, and I know what it means to trust the sand and the wind to blow wildflowers where they’re meant to be, both physically and metaphorically.

So, as we approach Lammas, the harvest time in the northern hemisphere, and Imbolc, the sowing time in the southern, I invite you to think about what the cycles of the seasons mean for you.  May the four winds blow you home.

Tarot Key of the Month: The Moon
 

The Fool’s spiritual self is becoming more clear, more developed, in this key, as The Fool approaches the path to enlightenment and intuition, guided by The Moon’s light.  Also offering guidance are the Hebraic yods we’ve seen in other keys, representing guidance from the life force above.  However, the path is long and crosses into the mountains of challenges The Fool – and we – will always face on life’s pilgrimage.  Also note the path travels between towers of protection, offering The Fool security as well as a reminder to stay balanced.
 
Rising from the pool formed by the waters flowing from The Fool key is a crayfish, symbolic of humanity’s evolution to this point of development.  The wolf represents nature untamed, and the dog (maybe the same as in The Fool key?) represents humanity’s ability to adapt to the environment.
 
Here we see The Moon in its three primary stages – waxing, full, and waning, analogous to Maiden/Mother/Crone and body/mind/spirit in The Fool’s development.  Note this key as Key 18, becomes 9 numerologically.  Where The Hermit, Key 9, offered The Fool guidance from his lantern of wisdom, The Moon, as key 18 (9), offers The Fool guidance from intuition within.
