Please Come! ‘Paws Up for Riverhouse’

We are excited to be invited by Riverhouse in Arlington to participate in Paws Up for Riverhouse on Saturday, August 6, from 11 am to 2 pm! We’ll be featuring our Forever Changed pups looking for their forever homes. Keep a close eye on our Facebook page and Instagram as we get closer to see which pups will be attending the event! If you're interested in becoming a foster for FCAR, want to adopt one of the pups, or just want to bring your FCAR alum to say hello, we'd love to see you and tell you more about our programs or catch up! Hope to see many new and familiar faces there!

Earlier this month, our pups, fosters and adopters had a great time meeting all the potential adopters and puppy fans at Rebellion on the Pike. We are so grateful for the opportunity to feature our amazing pups at this event, and we cannot wait for more collaborations with Rebellion! Three of our pups were adopted as a result of this opportunity, and so many others received inquiries!

One of Our Happiest-Ever ‘Happy Tails’!

We first told you the story of the Great Dane mama Gabbana a few months ago: She was discarded by the puppy mill that used her solely for breeding when she gave birth to a litter of mixed-breed puppies. Even worse, soon after we took her and her babies in she had to be rushed to the ER due to gastric dilatation volvulus, a serious condition. She underwent emergency surgery and was very fortunate to have survived it.

Fast forward to July 1, when she found the most incredible family who loves her to pieces. Gabbana — now Raven Magnolia — is finally having the life that she deserves. She is immensely loved by her new parents, human siblings and canine sister, as you can see in the photo. Her life has truly been forever changed thanks to everyone who took part in her rescue and recovery, and for her “fan club” members who generously donated to her surgery and care. We are SO thrilled to be sharing this “happy tail” with you and we wish Raven the happiest life ever with her forever family.

A Challenging 2022: FCAR’s Half-Year Report

It has been a hard year in the world of rescue. Adoption rates have dropped, return rates have increased, and shelters are forced to euthanize more regularly due to overcrowding. We desperately want to help as many pups in danger as we can, but we are also not immune to this dramatic shift. Nevertheless, we are happy to share that for the first half 2022, we were able to rescue 135 pups and 1 kitten. Of the animals we rescued, 122 pups have found their forever homes! This is not counting the 9 pups that are coming to us today and a family of black labs (mom plus 10 puppies!) in the next few days.

We cannot do the work that we do without the help and sacrifice of our amazing fosters, and we ALWAYS need MORE foster homes so we can save more lives! To learn more about our foster program or other ways you can support our cause, visit our website at https://www.foreverchangedar.org/foster-a-pet. We provide all food and supplies for fosters, so all you need is a loving and safe home. Always wanted to try fostering but not sure if you're quite ready for it? Interested in Fostering? You’ve Come to the Right Place!

Fostering a pup is a rewarding and fun experience for both families and singles. Want to learn more? We asked frequent FCAR fosters Lynn and Kevin to tell us about their experiences. Read their responses and then go to https://www.foreverchangedar.org/foster-a-pet to get started as an FCAR foster today!

Q. How did you get started fostering with Forever Changed AR?
A.
Early in the pandemic, we saw a post on NextDoor urgently requesting a foster for a dog who had just had puppies. Our three sons were all home with us, we weren't going anywhere, and we figured it would be something fun to do. Our only hesitation was that our elderly dog, Jax, was clearly nearing the end, and we didn't want to do anything to upset him. But we took the plunge, he didn't seem to mind, and it was absolutely the best experience for our family. Watching the puppies grow from not being able to open their eyes or move around all the way through to their adoption at 8 weeks was something we will never forget. During that time, Jax died, and ultimately we decided to adopt the mom (Lainey) we were fostering. Since then, we've fostered many other dogs, and one other one became a permanent resident. [Lynn is pictured below with their first two foster puppies shortly after their birth, and Kevin is shown above with Heidi, an FCAR foster the family adopted.]
Q. What do you enjoy most about being a foster family for FCAR?
A.
So many dogs to play with! Kevin would have a dozen dogs if he could — fostering allows him to interact with different dogs without any long-term commitment. And Heidi, one of our two dogs (adopted after fostering) absolutely loves having new playmates. Our other dog, Lainey (also a former foster) isn't so much into playing, but doesn't seem to mind sharing her home with dogs in need (she just ignores them!). So if you think fostering isn't for you because you already have a dog — your dog would probably love it!

Q. You’ve transitioned to our temporary foster program — filling in temporarily when a pup's regular foster family needs a break. What are the benefits of temporary fostering?
A.
We travel a lot, and filling in for short-term assignments allows us to still foster, but have a hard end date. And it's a win-win because it allows others to sign on to foster, knowing that someone is there when they want to go on vacation or need to be out of town.
Q. Any advice for those considering fostering?
A.
Everyone always says “I don't know how you do it — I would fall in love and wouldn't be able to give them up!” We say, just treat it like you are dog sitting for a friend. We go into it with the mindset that we are just a caretaker, and we get really excited for the dog when they find their forever home. And if you do fall in love and feel that the dog really belongs with you — is that so bad? Fostering is the best way to adopt — you get to see a dog's personality and how it fits in your family before committing.

Seeking Fosters & Adopters for these 2 Cuties

Why has no one snapped up one or both of these great pups yet?! If you’re looking for a sweet, smart and people-loving dog, look no further than Luca or Lucinda, a brother and sister who’ve been with us for a couple months now. They are a pittie/shephard mix, about 4-5 months old and 22 pounds each. We’re looking for fosters and adopters for these two, who can be taken together or separately. Visit https://www.foreverchangedar.org/dogs-puppies for more information.

Both siblings do well with other dogs. Luca loves running around outside and exploring, and is doing great on the leash. He also is becoming a great listener, sitting and waiting for treats and food, and loves to cuddle up with his people. Lucinda also loves being around people, giving kisses to everyone and snuggling. She knows how to take advantage of a good sun spot, laying out wherever the sun is! Lucinda is coming along well with potty training and has learned to sit whether there is a treat in question or not.
