RUP Teacher Carlos Ramirez in Bilbao, Spain wrote to us with this message: Right use of power is really close to me. I came across this quote of Diane Salters (2022) that she wrote after the death of Desmont Tutu, I thought you would like it.

“We are all damaged. We all need healing. … It is easy to see how being disadvantaged is damaging, how it undermines not only the physical fabric of a person’s life but also their sense of identity and self-confidence, so that even when opportunities arise, they may not be equipped to seize them. It is less easy to understand how being advantaged, being part of the oppressor class, is damaging. Here it is more a matter of the heart, mind and (the Arch would say) the soul. Being advantaged eats away at sensitivity, empathy, humility—our essential humanity.”

AN INVITATION TO A BRAVE SPACE

Together we will create brave space

Because there is no such thing as a “safe space”

We exist in the real world

We all carry scars and we have all caused wounds.

In this space

We seek to turn down the volume of the outside world.

We amplify voices that fight to be heard elsewhere,

We call each other to more truth and love

We have the right to start somewhere and continue to grow.

We have the responsibility to examine what we think we know.

We will not be perfect.

It will not always be what we wish it to be

But

It will be our brave space together,

And

We will work on it side by side.

Upcoming Webinars

Please peruse this newsletter, and take heart. We hope you will join us in our monthly Thought-Leader and Webinar offerings. We would enjoy meeting you if you haven’t attended before.

Tuesday, July 19th from 1-2 mountain time: The Hoop and The Tree as a Lens For Understanding Power, a webinar with Chris Hoffman

The Hoop and the Tree describes the deep structure of psychological and spiritual wholeness and shows how understanding and embodying that structure can help us lead lives of balance and fulfillment. Chris will give an overview of the Hoop-and-Tree model of wholeness for individuals and societies and then discuss power in the context of this model. His presentation will include images of the deep structure of wholeness from around the world and in many spiritual traditions as well as in modern psychology. He will address such issues as stunted vs. developed power and the key initiations that are missing in contemporary society. He is looking forward to a rich conversation with the RUPI community.

Chris Hoffman, M.B.A., M.Ed. is the author of four books of poetry and The Hoop and the Tree: A Compass for Finding a Deeper Relationship with All Life. Integrating modern psychology and the world’s wisdom traditions, The Hoop and the Tree describes the deep structure of psychological and spiritual wholeness and shows how understanding and embodying that structure can help us lead lives of balance and fulfillment. Chris is a retired management consultant and professional counselor who now devotes most of his non-writing time to volunteer work for social justice and a livable climate. www.hoopandtree.org

Julie Diamond Highlight

Dr. Julie Diamond (www.diamondleadership.com) is a thought-leader in the realms in the wise use of power who I greatly admire. She recently put together a global conference gathering people who care about power and the issues that go with it. Dr. Amanda and I did a presentation at the conference about the social dynamics of power differential relationships. In connection with the Ted Talk about giving great feedback, I’m attaching this quote from Julie.

“Leader behavior has an enormous impact on workplace culture, influencing employee motivation, productivity, and creative engagement.

Yet even the most emotionally intelligent leaders can be unaware of the impact they're making.

The reason? Power.

In a high power role, you get less feedback. Your words and actions are magnified through the lens of your power. You're just too far upstream from the downstream effects of your action. As a result, you're operating without a full and accurate picture of your impact on the culture and performance of others. And this has serious consequences.

But, like any other skill, using power effectively can be developed.”
