The Reader is on Vacay

The Reader is on vacation this month. We will be back in August. Check the calendar for regularly scheduled volunteer service and advanced training opportunities.

Meanwhile, here are a few selected opportunities.

Purple Martin Roost Clean-up

Thousands of Purple Martins congregate at this time of year in preparation for their migration to South America for the winter. Volunteers are needed at the Purple Martin roost at Capital Plaza (5407 N IH-35, Austin) every morning, now through mid-September to collect dead and injured birds from the parking lot.

Injured birds have a better chance of survival if they can be collected as early as possible and taken to Wildlife Rescue on 5401 E. MLK Jr Blvd, Austin when it  opens at 9am. Dead birds need to be removed from the parking lot every morning.  You can either freeze the birds and arrange for pickup by Shelia Hargis to be sent for research at Texas A&M, or you can dispose by means of your choice.

If you're interested in signing up, please contact Kat Ross  and Julia Balinsky  They will provide instruction, if needed.
