WEBINAR INTRODUCES THE CO-OP GOVERNANCE DASHBOARD AND SURVEY TO SCA MEMBERS

By participating in the 2022 survey, new respondents will be granted access to the Dashboard and its data at no cost.

The Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives is hosting a webinar on its Co-operative Governance Dashboard, July 26th at 12pm CST. The 30-minute session - held through Zoom - is presented for SCA members and other interested Saskatchewan co-ops and credit unions.

Through this session, participants will learn about the features of the Dashboard and the types of information it contains. Data was gathered from more than 80 co-op organizations across Canada between 2019 and 2021 and includes governance practices such as director compensation, demographics, and board training.

The July 26th webinar will also briefly discuss the 2022 Canadian Co-operative Governance Survey, which continues to gather information on the current state of co-operative governance practices in the co-operative sector (including credit unions) across Canada.

Respondents that complete Wave 2 of this survey can access the Dashboard and data at no charge, can review their survey responses, and can use the tool to generate anonymized benchmark data. This will allow respondents to compare things like director compensation at their co-operative versus that of their peers.

To register for this no-charge event, email Danika.Dinko@sask.coop by July 25th.

GOLF TOURNAMENT RESCHEDULED UNTIL 2023

Camp Kindling and CDF will still benefit from our sponsors' generosity!

Sadly we have had to cancel this year’s Co-op Classic Golf Tournament, which was scheduled for July 19th.

While we are incredibly disappointed not to be holding this event - which raises funds for Camp Kindling and the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada - we have decided to put all our efforts into planning for the 2023 event and celebrate 25 years of the Co-op Classic at that time.

You can still support CDF Canada and Camp Kindling without hauling out your golf bag. To donate directly to Camp Kindling visit the secure donation page on our website. For CDF Canada visit their website. If you’d like to donate to them through SCA instead, call or email us and we can arrange it.

AWESOME NEWS: Our thanks to those who had agreed to sponsor this year. Many of them have donated some or all of their sponsorship to our causes. We'll post the full list on our website shortly.

IT’S BEEN A GREAT SUMMER FOR CAMP KINDLING

We are so happy to be back and operating in-person.

Two Camps down, three more to go! The Doug Alexander Intermediate Camp starts later this week and Introductory Camp 2 takes place next week. Both at Last Mountain Lake. Then our invitation-only Earl Hanson Graduate Camp. If you missed the registration for our 2022 season, check back in January 2023 as we announce next summer’s Camps.

Here are some moments from our Camp sessions this year. We'll be sharing lots more on social media.

CAMP HEROES: SASKATOON CO-OP

We'd like all Saskatchewan co-ops to sponsor at least one young person from their community to attend Camp. Guess who went above and beyond?

Our sincerest thanks to Saskatoon Co-op for sponsoring 18 kids to attend Camp Kindling this summer, including one young person who wasn’t even from their trading area! That's an incredible $13,000 investment!!

We can’t event count how many Co-op Principles they’ve surpassed through all of this. Thanks again and Warm Fuzzies (which is how we spread good wishes to everyone at Camp).

Each participant sponsor is important and we thank every Saskatchewan co-op and credit union that sent one or more young people to Camp Kindling this year! Once Camp is over for the season, we'll update our sponsorship pages and formally recognize everyone who helped make Camp Kindling 2022 a success.

The co-op is also conducting an energy audit to find ways to stay sustainable and affordable.

Residents of the Rosewood Housing Co-operative in Moose Jaw paid off their building’s mortgage after 33-and-a-half years. They celebrated the milestone by burning a copy of the document in front of their building on June 24.

Now that the mortgage is paid off,  Rosewood is conducting an energy audit, said Debbie Firth, the current president of the board. With some energy upgrades, the building can be future-proofed, helping to continue to keep rent low. Read MORE

FINDING YOURSELF THROUGH SUMMER CAMP

This was the first summer of Camp Kindling for SCA's executive director. Here's an excerpt from Danika's newest blog post.

This month we launched the summer 2022 sessions of Camp Kindling and have already sent off two groups of campers -- some for their first experience ever at camp. Watching the parents excitedly pull up to drop off their kids, many reminiscing of their own adventures at “Co-op Camp,” gave me a glimpse into the history and importance of Camp Kindling.

Most of the 80+ campers that headed out to Candle Lake did not know each other. Many had not previously attended camp -- and for some this may be their first outdoor experience ever.

Some perspective for those who haven't attended a summer camp in some time: This same experience could mirror a networking event in an industry you have just joined, a job fair you attend seeking your next career, or moving to a new city. As adults we often find ourselves in these situations and you often navigate the situation based on your past experiences. Like those you develop at camp. Read
