Sister Spit workshops move online!
Due to concerns with the pandemic, our friends at Sister Spit are no longer able to make it to Seattle on their tour. While we're sad we won't be able to host them in person for workshops and events, we're excited to announce that all scheduled workshops will move online! This will allow people to participate in these incredible classes without the barrier of being in Seattle. Space is limited, so don't wait to register!
Modern Tarot: Contemporary Tarot for Everyone with Michelle Tea

Whether you are a curious newcomer to tarot, a burgeoning beginner, or a pro, this lecture-style workshop will walk you through the structure and meaning of the 78-cards, pausing to answer participant questions as well as offer tips for spreads and ritual, as well as fascinating trivia attached to the iconic images.
The Punch-Up: Unleashing Your Humor on the Page with Beth Lisick

Explore methods and get tips on finding the funny in this "writers' room" session. Bring your essays, stories, monologues, and screenplays to share and punch up!
True Lies: Writing Speculative Memoir With Michelle Tea

What Is Love? Writing Queer Love Stories with Kamala Puligandla

Discuss the craft components that make a compelling, contemporary, queer love story. Examine excerpts from examples and deconstruct the love stories that move us and inform our lives to open more expansive ways for our stories to twist, turn, and transform.
Narrative Layer Cake: Sigrid Nunez' The Friend with Michael Shilling

A moving meditation on loss, a funny yarn about a dog, a deep inquiry into storytelling: Sigrid Nunez does all three in The Friend. Using a detailed chapter outline as our home base, we'll examine how Nunez constructs this short, multilayered, National Book Award-winning novel, with discussions revolving around the ways she creates character, conflict, and theme.
Food Writing 101 with Sabra Boyd

Food writing can be notoriously difficult to break into. After all, everyone eats and everyone has opinions. In this course, we will workshop a draft, craft pitches for publication, and discuss how to find the right editor. We will also discuss the politics and ethics of food writing, exploring contemporary work and more. (Warning: Class discussions might make you hungry!)
Storytelling in a Flash with Margot Leitman

Learn how to use your untapped humanity and embarrassing moments in a way that can reach a wide audience via oral storytelling. Each student leaves class with a six- to ten-minute showcase-able set of autobiographical material.
The Poetry of Food, Drink & Delight with Susan Rich

Whether it's a picnic in a midnight orchard or a blue gin cocktail by the beach, our senses light up with taste and scent. We become keenly attuned to life, and to poetry when drinking and eating. In this class, we will read the work of Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Li-Young Lee, Naomi Shihab Nye, Ilya Kaminsky, and others—then we will write food and drink poems of our own.
Art & Craft of Writing Poetry Book Reviews with Risa Denenberg

Reviewing poetry not only supports the work of other poets, but also teaches the art of "close reading" and will inevitably improve your own writing. In class, you will learn how a poetry review differs from other types of reviews, discover what type of reviewer you are, and practice writing a short "reader review."

Works in Progress is an open mic for all writers. Read your work, meet other writers, and find out what’s going on in the literary community. Poetry, fiction, essays, memoirs, plays, unclassified, and unclassifiable work of a literary nature are all welcome. Applause for all. No judgment. This event is free and open to the public.

Write with Hugo House with Alma García

In this group, writers introduce themselves and are provided optional fiction, poetry and nonfiction prompts to work on for 60-70 minutes of sustained silent writing time, though they are more than welcome to work on their own projects instead.
Poetry’s Possible Powers: A Reading and Conversation

Poems don’t often change the world, but they can initiate and support changes in individuals. In response to Poetry’s Possible Worlds, Lesley Wheeler’s memoir about the restorative effects of reading contemporary poetry, Wheeler moderates a reading and conversation about poetry’s power with authors Jeannine Hall Gailey, Mita Mahato, Martha Silano, and Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest.
Community Write-In with Lydia K. Valentine

Hugo House welcomes Kendall Kieras as Youth Programs - Scribe Intern for the summer!
Kendall Kieras is a poet and screenwriter from Seattle who is so excited to be working with Scribes this summer! Kendall has been a member of the 2020 Seattle Brave New Voices Slam Team, and a member of the 2021 and 2022 Macalester College CUPSI team. In 2020, they started their own queer teen lead film production company, Third Charm Films, directing and airing a miniseries, Hetero which is currently airing on Youtube. They are currently pursuing a degree in Political Science and English.
Kids Write-In

Kids Write-In is a free, weekly virtual writing circle for elementary school-aged youth to write independently or with the help of an adult. Each session students have the opportunity to practice creative writing and share with each other.

Are you a high school student who is devoted to improving your craft and wants to find others like you? The Young Writers Cohort at Hugo House was established with you in mind! Members gather every other week with their instructor to learn, practice, and grow as writers, while developing as a supportive and educational cohort. Cohort applications open August 12 and close September 12!
