Hi Everyone

As the temperature picks up, please take care when you are out and about. A few things to consider:

DAPTC AUGUST e-news |  We will be moving to two e-news editions in August and then back to weekly in September and a new look. Apologies today for sending two e-news out on the same day! However we have a few things to let you know about.

COST OF LIVING CRISIS & 2022/23 BUDGETS | I've stopped short of saying how many shopping days are left until Christmas, however, I'd like to point out that this Autumn's budget setting may just be more challenging than any previous years. We are all facing significant personal challenges and that will be the same when councils set their budgets. Supplier costs, salary costs and insurances are all seeing significant increases. Councillors may want to take the opportunity to get booked on to one of The Parkinson Partnership courses before they book up. Don't forget to run it past your Clerk: FINANCE COURSE DATES

NALC STAR COUNCIL AWARDS | It's that time of year when NALC announce the shortlist for their Star Awards and there may be some runners and riders from Dorset. Look out for the communications as we'd like you all to get voting when the news lands of who has made the final! It would be fab if we could grab an award for one of our members.

OPERATION LONDON BRIDGE | This has been emailed out this week for Clerks to review. Please be mindful of the sensitivity of the information provided.

DAPTC AGM | We've written to all Clerks to seek any motions for the 2022 AGM in November and the timeline and submission form can be found on our AGM WEBPAGE

Enjoy the fine and warm weather and share the following notice as it's likely to be unbelievably hot! Met Office Amber Extreme Heat Warning

** NEW ** 1.  Community Governance Review final recommendations now published

The report to Dorset Council setting out the Community Governance Review (CGR) final recommendations has now been published.  You can find the report and all associated papers here.  The report contains a link where you can find all the submissions received during the last round of public consultation on the draft recommendations, which took place from 28th February to 23rd May.

It should be noted that the recommendations relation to Weymouth, Chickerell, Winterborne Farringdon and Vale of Allen have been withdrawn from this Community Governance Review in order to allow further public consultation to be carried out.  A separate CGR relating to these areas will be undertaken later this year.

You can watch the Council meeting that took place on Tuesday 14 July 2022 using this
link. The discussion on the CGR Report item starts at 1hr 10 secs.

The final recommendations agreed by Full Council at the meeting will be published during July via the
Community Governance Review web page and an Order to implement any adopted changes will also be made, with any changes taking effect on 1 April 2024.  The first elections under any new community governance arrangements will take place on 2 May 2024.

** NEW ** 2. Congratulations to Weymouth Town Council!

Weymouth Town Council is the South West Councils Challenge Cup winner!  Fifteen teams from councils across the South West competed against each other for the cup.  Staff from the council experienced what it was like to run a council under extreme pressure. They completed against other authorities and Fire and Rescue services.  Read more about their win on the Weymouth Town Council website here.

** NEW ** 3. Does your council have a Flood Warden?

Does your council have a Flood Warden?  Can you help provide further information and practical guidance on the role and responsibilities to another clerk?  If you would be willing to help, please contact Tamsin Ely, Clerk at Char Valley Parish Council.

** NEW ** 4. Dorset GPs score highly in national survey

An independent survey eight out of 10 respondents in Dorset rate their experience of their local GP practice positively.  Find out more about the results of the survey here.

5. Letter from David Sidwick, Dorset's Police & Crime Commissioner

Take a look at the latest stakeholder letter from the Dorset PCC David Sidwick.

6. Register your defibrillators with The Circuit

Many parish councils and meetings have now installed defibrillators in your buildings, within the community or will know of and even have supported local organisations which have.  Now it's the time to make sure your defibrillators are registered with The Circuit.  The Circuit is the national defibrillators network which connects defibrillators to NHS ambulance services across the UK so that in those crucial moments after a cardiac arrest, they can be accessed quickly to help save lives.  The moment someone has a cardiac arrest, the clock starts ticking and every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces their chances of survival. However, many defibrillators are never used because emergency services don't know where they are or how to access them.

7. Cost of Living help for your communities

Dorset Council is working with its partners to signpost people to the right place to meet their circumstances.  Cost of living Help is a new webpage on the Dorset Council website which puts advice and support on money, access to food, housing, support for children, mental health and wellbeing and employment, all in one place.

Dementia-friendly Councils - Survey

NALC has published a new survey on dementia-friendly councils.

In 2020, NALC launched a survey to identify the work that local councils are doing to assist those most vulnerable in their communities and gain insight into potential barriers to this progress.  Following this, NALC published the Dementia-Friendly Communities guide, demonstrating the positive impact of building dementia-friendly communities and providing our local councils with the tools to help them develop their own.

The latest survey aims to gather feedback on the usage and effectiveness of this publication. All responses will help support local councils in ensuring that people living with dementia and their families continue to be included in all aspects of community life.

The survey closes on 22 July 2022.     Complete the survey
