Kick Ons at ????

By Nath Lanham

Well. Well well well. A game akin to a well defined unwell low wello in a well, with a lowe, tears welled up below a wellowtree (Young. L 2022)

Anyways, As I received the honour of writing the griff tale for this week I pondered, what should I write about? The game? That they were the better team for 80mins? That Robbie couldn’t catch a cold (word is Lenny did tho)? That Nossy actually went back off the mark or that hads decided he’d aim for between the little sticks all day. No. Blatantly, I’d rather not.

So instead, I’ll write about the more important happenings of the weekend.

Pre game

Batemans bay. 30-9. Backs warmed up well. Mids lacked a little bit of intensity and the bubble was up in the forward line but were not accurate in their intent.

1st half

Conclusion of the warm up saw us return to the 4 walled structures at the marina (or for the must be nice kind- the Corrigans Pent houses) in preparation for the game. It was a collectively slow and frustrating start to the 1st half. We found ourselves in enemy territory. A place we clearly were not welcome in nor excited to be in. Whether that was because of the great inability to actually enter the venue or the function room that could barely accommodate us let alone the Batemans bay egos.

So, In an effort to turn the night around, many looked to a faithful leader. “Come on, pack it, get to The Catalina” a wise Tim Robb shouted, with 50s burning in his back pockets ready to punish the abundance of reverse ATMs at the great establishment. So we followed.

High energy was clearly present. Gussy and Clint, notable mentions. A real around top club performance ensued. Great laughs, stories, food, beer was shared.

2nd Half

Despite a monumental effort in the first half, we did not drop off there. An all out war broke out for the host of kickons. Gussy’s 20 something person villa was the clear front runner, followed by mountys pent house at corrigans. Iz’s was roughie that popped up (his dog, an apology) But somehow, 50 people packed out Naths 3 bed shoebox. Evidently, The marina sweat box was heaving with Jordy Kelly dropping bangers bigger than the so fresh hits of 2005. Whilst the police did in fact intervene, it did not end there. Many did in fact make it to Corrigans but my early onset of alzheimers proceeds me.

Core Memories

By Alisha 'AP' Phillips

The weekend started when most of the team made their way down to the Bay on Friday afternoon and grabbed some “din dins” (dinner) at the Catalina (thanks Abby!) Some went back to their rooms to watch the AFL game whilst others played their own made-up games in the cabins and sought to break the ceiling lights.

Saturday morning quickly came round, and we were treated to a clear blue sunny sky. Only later would we realise how hot that sun really was.

After a solid, focused & intense warm up we were fired up one last time in the sheds before taking to the field with one word in everyone’s head “accountability”.

Within seconds of the game starting, Ine landed a powerful tackle on her opposition number…. cue Colin! Free kick high tackle- it was clear from this call that it wasn’t going to be Colin’s finest 80 minutes.

On entering the field AP found number 4, bumped her, as per Dani’s last direction from the bench, and BANG choke hold delivered by the seahawk. Moments passed before Specs had finally stopped flapping like a Batemans Bay seagull and managed to get the whistle in her mouth. In the heat of the moment, she then proceeded to give it in favour of Batemans number 4, to everyone’s surprise (even Colin’s) before rectifying her decision and giving a 50, 6-0 ANU.

ANU posted another goal before Batemans got one back to end the quarter 6-12 behind.

Batemans came out exactly as we thought they would at the start of the second- fast and furious. They scored 3 goals in quick concession without reply. ANU fought back with some big hits in the middle of the field by the midfield & some great overhead marks taken in our attacking 50. Heading into the sheds at half time we were only 2 goals behind, 32-20.

Batemans started the premiership quarter in the same manner as the 2nd, with an early goal. ANU raised it again with some fine desperation footy coming from Elly and Eliza down the left-hand side that resulted in an ANU goal. Sissie continued to keep the number 1 contained, matching her speed for speed on the wing, minimising her impact on the game. 46-32.

Going into the last quarter with the game still in the balance, Colin's umpiring skills, unlike a bottle of fine wine, only got worse the older he and the game got. Another poor umpiring decision led to something that should never happen on the footy field. Kudos to Sienna for handling it in the mature manner of which she did.

It’s important to note that in a game filled with high emotion it's crucial for heads to be kept cool…. normally this could be seen from Gez, however, not today. Demonstrated by him throwing the Buzzie’s whiteboard on the ground following another ridiculous call. The worse bit wasn’t that he lost his cool, he then had to conduct a search and rescue party for all his magnets that had dispersed upon impact.

Fi kicked home the last goal for ANU and the game but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the win. Going down by 8, 52-44. Everyone agreed that it was a phenomenal display of women’s footy and evidence that women’s footy is only going to get stronger in the future.

Following all 3 games we made our way in convey to their version of Hellenic where we were made to feel extremely welcomed and embraced by our hosts (don’t worry we’ll stand!) by the end of the marathon awards - It was made apparent that Batemans literally give out awards for just turning up.

We finished our drinks and made our way back to Catalina where we grabbed some food, more drinks, listened to the band (they were no DJ Shawn!) & Rasche took the opportunity to take selfies with Kate Dean – who was really feeling the emotional pull of being a part of the Griffo’s.

The rest of the evening, depending on your kick on party of choice, either ended in a noise complaint fine or the police shutting down the party at cabin 2.

The morning after the night before…… majority of the Buzzies regrouped & debriefed on the classy rooftop terrace of a local café. Kylie and Eliza compared facial bruises, Lucy circled the table trying to walk off her hangover, Rasche educated the head chef that her eggs benedict was missing an “essential ingredient” … the hollandaise sauce! Rasche to this point in the day had been in such a charming mood. Possibly the side effect of the unrefrigerated 30hour old pizza that she ate in the early hours of Sunday morning affecting her mood. Specs was renamed “Big Guy” & we were all treated to a gallery of photos from the previous night’s antics.

Whilst some of the Buzzies stayed in the bay for one more day, the rest of us headed back to Canberra. Safe to say that some handled the windy roads of the mountains better than others- Gemma’s unscheduled stop on the side of the road is a clear example of not handling it well.

All in all, a weekend full of great footy, lots of laughs and core memories made…. Bring on the finals!

Don't Feed the Seagulls

By Darcy 'Van' Sheahan

On a frosty Canberra Saturday, ANU ressies as they downed the best meat pies Bungendore had to offer and set their sights on the coastal turf of Batemans Bay. The popular retiree getaway readied their best grandkids for an intense match of skill and grit … and then put whatever surfey bums they had hanging around the fish and chip shop on to play the against ressies.

A little bit about Batemans bay; ‘The Bay’ was found by famous English settler James Cook. He never told anyone why he named it ‘Batemans’ bay and to this day, fishing’s been good and no one seems to care enough to follow it up.

As the team journeyed to the ground (also the infamous site of Dwayne Johnson’s public execution) the conditions were perfect. The sun accented Nick Wagland’s new precision haircut and had many players questioning whether Arch had actually found the fountain of eternal youth. With notable return to sport from Yeatesy and Benny H, ANU took to the field shaking hands with Bay players, unsure if they were covered in Grippo or Mr Zogs SEX wax.

Uni began the game with the gusto of a Canberran team who really wanted to beat a coastal team (for lack of better metaphor). Early in the game however, scoring shots were not capitalised and with June coming to an end, players were no longer able to use support of pride month as an excuse for kicks not being straight. A few run on misses gave the Bay Sea Hawks the chance to get a jump and with less scoring shots were sitting on top.

The second quarter saw another turn for the worst for ANU, with the surfey bums riding such phresh barrels to pit the gnar of the later swell. Dude, the breaks would stand up and mellow out any mush the sandbar undercut and with the low tide and onshore, anyone out there riding longys were wearin some serious shade and totally kookin. The Bawks were sittin eets in springys and grifs hefty steamers were coppin some absolute lashings mannnnn.

It was clear the Griffs had some work to do in the second half as players filed into the rooms with their mouthguards in their socks and spirits equally low. But after a most (a)rousing rev up from team leader Robba, we came out with some fire and lolly snakes in our belly.

The third quarter hung in the balance and though scoreboard did not make a significant improvement,  the feeling of ‘we might get this’ sat in the back of tiring players minds. Special mentions to the Batemans bay midfielder who put the biggest hit of the day on the umpire and knocked himself out in the process.

The final quarter exploded with griff confidence, stringing strong strands of stability steering stiff stops to stress. This brought uni within 2 kicks of victory. To their disappointment the playing group couldn’t maintain the pressure and conceded a whole box of last quarter chippies to the Batemans Bay seagulls.

Well if anyone asks, that’s how the game went. We all know the best stories of the coast trip happen after the game, but we’ll have to leave that to the Griffin fairytale.
