Into the Wild
There is something inherently human about the attraction to wild places. It's the place one goes for discovery, revelation, and catharsis. In a time of societal breakdown, how do we respond when the wilderness comes to us, when the things we've taken for granted no longer are guaranteed? Join us as we go into the wild.

ACTION is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Monday, July 18th at 5:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church located at 323 Wick Avenue.
This will be an opportunity for the 20 evicted tenants to ask questions, to discuss transition plans and to seek clarification on the city’s development plan. We applaud the work that has happened thus far in order to update this building and create opportunities for the city.
However, as an organization that works towards healthy, safe, JUST communities, we are discouraged by the treatment of these tenants. We believe that moving forward, accommodations can be made that create opportunities for them as well, so that their businesses can continue to thrive.
The public is welcome to attend and will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

UUYO Work Party
July 23rd, 10 am - 2 pm
Help keep UUYO beautiful by volunteering at our Work Party! Depending on the weather there are many tasks that need done outside and inside. Work Parties are also a great way to meet other UUYO friends. Whether its beautifying our gardens, mowing, or building work, there is always something to do.
Greenery
Gary Davenport proposes planting non-grass vegetation in some parts of the Church grounds that are now grass. Changes are intended to diversify the greenery, provide a bit of encouragement to pollinators, and slightly reduce the space that requires mowing. For details see the Buildings & Grounds Chronicle on the Church website, or the paper copy posted on the B&G
bulletin board in the downstairs hallway. Comments on the proposal should be sent to the Office for consideration from B&G and the Board.

Find It Here
As I was driving across the state line, I was struck by the contrasting state mottos of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania's slogan is "Pursue Your Happiness," and in my imagination Ohio's slogan seems to offer a different tact: "Find It Here." What is it we are really pursuing, and what if it's already here, waiting to be found?

From Consumer Consciousness to Producer Consciousness
No surprise here: prices are up. Some time ago our coffee supplier, Equal Exchange, announced the need to increase prices. We did not increase prices at UUYO right away, as we had inventory, and I took advantage of a couple of sales. But now we must get in line to help small farmers across the commodity food world. Remember, no matter how much price increases hurt, they always hurt the poor populations more. The farmers who grow the coffee, cocoa beans, and tea which enhance our lives, are among that population.
Consequently, beginning August 1, there will be a $1.00 increase in the price of packages of coffee: Regular coffees will be $9.00 and Decaf $10.00. Other items will be adjusted as we add inventory.
There is still time to pick up your favorite beverage or chocolate bar at the old price!
Remember also that the church supplies coffee for everyone at Coffee Hour. Enjoy, but think about it when you make your pledge to UUYO this fall. And coffee makers in the kitchen, be reasonable when you make pots of coffee; check the attendance, and consider making an additional Airpot, only if needed.
Thanks.
Ellen Satre, for the Equal Exchange Project
Give Away The Plate
The Share the Plate recipient for July is Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership’s Garden Resources of Warren (GROW) Program, an urban agriculture program that works to address the identified food desert areas of Warren by providing technical support, leadership development, and educational programming for Warren's community gardens and manages the Warren Farmer's Market. GROW partners with many organizations and community members to increase access to healthy, affordable locally grown foods. GROW is committed to developing a local and regional food system that reduces food insecurity and creates economic development opportunities.
GROW provides technical support to garden projects in the city of Warren and surrounding communities. Technical support includes soil testing, supplies, general advice, project planning, starter plants, fundraising assistance, or other needs as identified by the community garden leader.
The GROWing Garden Leadership Conference included sessions on Community Garden Record Keeping and Fundraising, Recruiting Community Garden Volunteers, and Community Garden Communication, Story-Telling, and Events.
The Seeds to Soil Project gave away over 2,100 starter plants to community gardens in the city of Warren. The goal of the project is to help offset some of the costs associated with starting a garden plot.
GROW not only provides a space for people to garden, it also teaches area residents different techniques to make their experience more enjoyable as well as increasing their potential yield. GROW has hosted classes on topics such as Vermicomposting, Pest ID and Plant Disease, Growing Season Extension, Soil Health, and Canning.
Through the GOOD FOOD HERE Program, small convenience stores in the city sell produce. Currently there are two local stores participating in the program. Both locations are interested in increasing the amount of fresh and local foods they supply in their stores for their customers. GROW seeks to continue working with small businesses that would like to expand their current fresh food offerings and the various payment options including SNAP and WIC.
GROW participates in local and regional food policy and networking coalitions, such as the Trumbull County Health Department Creating Healthy Communities Coalition, Mahoning Valley Food Coalition, and the Northeast Ohio Regional Food Collaboration.

Online Giving
It is now easier to donate online through the church website – there is a “GIVE ONLINE to UUYO” link at the top of the home page that provides options for donating to several funds, including Give Away the Plate. If you want to use a phone app to give you can download VANCO’s GivePlus app from the Apple App Store or from Google Play.
Both methods give you the option of making a single donation or setting up a recurring gift to UUYO
Another Way to Give to UUYO
An online service from Huntington Bank (formerly TCF Bank) allows you to make an online deposit directly into the UUYO account by check or credit card from this link:
Once you provide your name and email you can include a message in the form letting us know how you want your contribution to be used at UUYO.
Enter the information requested for the type of payment you choose and click the Send Payment button. You and UUYO will receive email confirmation of your donation.
Our Mission is to build a diverse and transformative spiritual community, help people live lives of wholeness, and promote justice, peace, and religious freedom.
