When it comes to shooting a pistol with competence and confidence, there are four primary things that need to happen. We need to get the pistol into the fight. We must establish a grip on the pistol that facilitates a proper index to the target and allows for rapidly hitting the target with two to N rounds. We will establish a sight picture that enables those rounds to be accurately placed on the target. And we have to pull the trigger straight back to the rear at speed so that the pistol is properly aligned to the target when the trigger breaks and the bullet leaves the barrel. Simple.
Where this simplicity get's complex is doing at speed on a target placed at a distance that requires all of the above fundamentals to be executed with precision. For the sake this article, our goal standard will be 2 A zone hits on a USPSA target placed at 10 yards from the shooter in 1.75 seconds from concealment or a duty holster rig. This distance and time place things around the Tueller Drill criteria which makes it real world applicable and the accuracy standard at 10 yards necessitates proper sight alignment and trigger press.
Getting the pistol into the fight starts with getting the pistol out of the holster. For a responsibly armed citizen carrying concealed, this starts with accessing the pistol. The shooter should use two hands to clear any and all cover garments fully out of the way. The shooter should then acquire a properly aligned strong hand grip on the pistol and draw the pistol straight out of the holster. For the law enforcement officer with a retention holster the officer needs to defeat the retention devices and establish a properly aligned strong hand grip while removing the pistol from the holster. In this case, hand size may change how things happen considerably between someone with small hands vs someone with large hands. In either case the grip alignment needs to be correct once the pistol is out of the holster.
This step can be practiced in isolation during dry-fire. The goal time here is less than .7 seconds for the pistol to be out of the holster.
Next the shooter is establishing a two hand grip on the pistol with an emphasis on properly indexing the pistol towards the target and enough support to rapidly place accurate hits on the target. A grip that has the pistol rotated left or right in the hand will not be naturally aligned with the target when the pistol is presented. If left uncorrected, this will cause errant shots after the first one as recoil becomes increasingly difficult to manage. Correction of the grip while the pistol is presented to the target requires valuable tenths of a second. Thus, it is extremely important that the strong hand draws the pistol from the holster with the weapon properly aligned in the hand.
The grip should be structured such that the strong hand has a firm grip on the pistol while still allowing the trigger finger to operate independent of the other fingers of the hand. The support hand should absolutely crush the grip. Almost all recoil control is done with the support hand. The hands are expected to be fatigued after a 10 minute training session. Anything less and there is insufficient grip pressure being exerted. The live-fire drill to work on grip is Doubles Drill from Ben Stoeger.
While the grip is being established, the eyes should be picking out a small point of focus on the target. We recommend picking out the top of the perforated A on the target and keeping the vision locked there. When the gun is presented, the hands will bring the pistol pointed to that spot on the target provided the pistol is properly aligned in the hands. The goal is to precisely bring the pistol to that exact spot on the presentation and not under or over drive the pistol in relation to the aiming spot. Adjustments take time which is in short supply given the standards outlined above.
The clock should be at approximately 1.2 or 1.3 seconds overall at this point. The presentation of the pistol to the exact spot on the target is a skill that should be practiced extensively in dry-fire training. Getting the pistol aligned and learning how to see what you need to see does not require sending rounds down range.
As the arms are being fully extended and the sight picture is being confirmed against the aiming point, the trigger can be prepped with the goal of breaking the shot as the arms reach their full extension point. This eliminates any extra time fishing around for the sights and makes the initial shot very efficient. From a safety perspective the trigger finger should remain on the slide until the sights are on target. Once a sight picture starts to appear the trigger finger moves to the trigger and begins to work the trigger. This first shot should break in the 1.4 to 1.5 second range. The second shot should break between 1.6 and 1.75 depending on when the first shot was fired and how quickly the shooter can manipulate the trigger.
The final step is learning to press the trigger rapidly at speed without disrupting the sight picture. This is another exercise that can be practiced during dry-fire training. With the proper grip established and the sights aligned on a small target, work the trigger as quickly as possible. The shooter should know if the sights were disrupted while pressing the trigger. To practice the follow on shot(s), relax the trigger finger until is no longer feels the trigger and then press again until the trigger has been firmly pressed. Check that the sights are not disturbed. The lack of reset for a striker fired pistol is irrelevant to this drill in dry-fire and generally trying to "work the reset" will unnecessarily slow the shooter down when shooting Doubles Drill.
All of the skills above with the exception of recoil management can be practiced during dry-fire. This leaves training ammo available for shooting Doubles Drill, Bill Drills, Blake Drill and other drills that focus on recoil management along with putting all of the skills together in execution.
It is important to train to difficult accuracy and time standards so that skills are fully mastered. This makes those skills fully available in a real world defensive scenario at the speed at which that scenario is likely to unfold.
