docomomo HI docophoto: sinclair library | 07.17 @ 9:45am
Join us on Sunday, July 17th for a Docophoto of the Sinclair Library on the University of Hawaii Mānoa campus. Docophotos are opportunities for Docomomo HI to crowdsource documenting a particular building of interest with members of our community. You are invited for a tour and historical overview of the Sinclair Library, and then invited to take photos of the current conditions. We will crowdsource any photos you’d like to share and add them to our online library. It has been a few years since our last Docophoto, but we typically pick buildings that are under threat of change, alteration, or demolition. The Sinclair Library is being repurposed by the University of Hawaii into a new student center, and no longer will be in the function of storing or sharing books.
We will meet at the front (mauka) entrance of the building at 9:45am, followed by a presentation and guided tour. The event is free to all, and parking is free on campus on Sundays.
The Gregg M. Sinclair Library was designed by the Hawaii firm, Lemmon, Freeth, Haines & Jones (now AHL), between 1951-56. It is a great representation of Tropical Modernism found on the UH campus built post-war, and is notable for its many passive cooling and shading design elements. Its great open-air design makes it an ideal building in the tropics, but unfortunately, not a great building to store books. Ironically, now that they are repurposing it for a student center, there is talk of enclosing it and adding air-conditioning.
