NEW Faculty

Patrick Lockwood is a new adjunct professor for the MS Clinical Psychology Program.  He will be teaching Psychopathology in the Fall of 2022. We asked Dr. Lockwood to answer a few questions for us as we welcome him to the program.  Welcome Dr. Lockwood!

Please introduce yourself, where you are from, your pronouns, and three identities for yourself?

My name is Dr. Patrick Lockwood, licensed clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at Cal Lutheran. I grew up in Southern Missouri. My pronouns are He/Him/His. My interests include cars, philosophy of science, and evolutionary biology.

What are your professional interests?
My professional interests include mentoring/supervising young clinicians, business development (i.e., growing programs or opening new ventures that impact communities for health and mental health), teaching, and working with high intensity patients (e.g., severe personality disorders or SUDs).

What do you enjoy about teaching?

Teaching is great on the one hand because I get to keep learning, I'm a huge nerd so teaching is fun.  On the other hand, teaching is really fulfilling because I get to both help people refine their burgeoning professional identity while also having the experience of inducting people into the profession, by developing a sense of collegiality.  

What are your tips for graduate students taking your class?

Be prepared to engage in critical thinking and own your biases. One of the most difficult but important parts of being in school is being challenged. This is especially important in clinical psychology as part of what we do with patients is provide an environment wherein "optimal frustration" can occur for growth and symptom resolution. For instance, in my classes you will learn that many fads in psychology are built on flimsy, if not very low quality, research. Be prepared to have your favorite ideas about psychology, human wellbeing, and what "evidence" based therapy means challenged.

Also, let's debate. Part of being collegial, to me, means being able to go back and forth respectfully. I hate being in a class wherein it feels like I'm preaching at someone or "lecturing to" someone. Conversation is where we learn and grow, so I want my classes to actually involve dialogue, not just rote memorization and regurgitation.

Anything else you can tell us about yourself?

I like to crack jokes in class, be forewarned.
