Powell Street Festival 2022

Mark your calendars - the 46th Annual Powell Street Festival, taking place Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 in Oppenheimer Park and surrounding neighbourhood!

We’re excited to have the festival in Paueru Gai, the historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood of Powell Street, with an appreciation for the power of relationships and community.

Would you consider making a donation to support the Powell Street Festival today?  Your gift will help us to connect diverse communities through arts and culture.
We have a full array of programming over the weekend to celebrate Japanese Canadian art and culture: contemporary and traditional live music, dance, and theatre performances on multiple stages. Delicious Japanese festival food, martial arts demonstrations, children’s programming, ikebana, community booths, a sumo tournament and our annual lottery return as festival classics.

We’re gathering in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighbourhood with a deeper sense of connection than ever before. This is all thanks to Telethon donors like you. Since our pandemic pivot in 2020 and the success of the Telethon, we have directed over $333,000 towards supporting meal preparation, grocery delivery and low-barrier employment in the DTES.

We’ve diversified our DTES Community Care Programs by partnering with a number of local groups and organizations. We currently partner with:

  • Our Advocacy and Outreach Committee (AOC), which holds seasonal events that combine cultural sharing and meal distributions to connect Japanese Canadian arts and culture with DTES residents. The next event, Asahi Tribute, will be held on August 20. Join us for a friendly game of baseball!

  • WePress Community Kitchen, which prepares 700-1,000 meals per week for the unhoused and precariously housed in the DTES.

  • DTES SRO-Collaborative, which offers cultural food programs to underserved elders and SRO tenants, thanks to financial support from Bing Ho and Carmen Kwan, Nora and Simpson Ma, Philomena Kaan and Sim Ang, Susan and Kennely Ho, and Richard Kuzyk

  • Community Impact Real Estate Society and EMBERS Eastside Works, whose grants support low-barrier employment for people living on low incomes and fulfilling key roles in our distribution of meals, care packages and groceries.

The festival’s return to the neighbourhood celebrates the resilience of our community and the strong relationship we have with the current residents of the DTES.

Join us in supporting grassroots efforts to sustain the community’s well-being through a one-time donation or monthly donation.
