Meet our newest members

Hollis and Andrew practice Drive

Welcome, Hollis and Andrew!

We’re thrilled to announce our two newest members! Community group members Hollis Moore and Andrew (Akira) Hansen have been joining us at our practice sessions, eagerly learning new songs and developing their playing techniques. They recently passed auditions and are now full members of the performance group, ready for the busy festival season ahead.

While they are new to our performance group, Hollis and Andrew are both experienced with being in front of a crowd. Andrew has performed several times with our community group at Missouri Botanical Garden's Japanese Festival. Hollis first joined the festival's Bon Odori celebrations as a teenager and has participated for many years. They're looking forward to their first official performances with us, so be on the lookout at one of our upcoming shows to welcome them to the group!

Spotlight on a Member

Meet Lorraine Hu

How did you get involved with taiko? Were you involved with music before joining SLOT?
I first found out about taiko through my friend and SLOT alum Mana! I went to the performance at the Touhill several years back and thought it was such a cool show that I immediately signed up for the community class. My previous musical experience includes piano, guitar, a random assortment of percussion instruments in school bands, and musical theater.

Do you have a favorite performance piece, and what drew you to it?
I don't know if I have one favorite piece, but I think I'm generally drawn to the more intense ones. Of the pieces I know how to play, Drive is probably my current fav - it's just really fun! Of the ones I haven't learned, I'm a complete sucker for Tenchi, it's always so cool to watch.

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming festival season?
The gauntlet of pain that is learning all of the pieces for the upcoming festival season! And, of course, being able to help share taiko with the public with this awesome group of people. 🙂

What other activities do you enjoy outside of taiko?
I like hiking, printmaking, cooking, and dancing.
We are a non-profit group that performs the art of taiko around the St. Louis area and the world.
